Hi 66ers, I'm considering purchasing a Rt66. There are no retailers in my area who carry them so I can't try it out. The Youtube videos I've seen had the volume set fairly high (above noon) and there doesn't seem to be much volume for a 30 watt amp. In one video, all knobs were set at 2 0'clock, and the amp still seemed to be at bedroom volume. Is this a gigging amp, or just a recording amp?

Gigging amp, for sure. This thing is loud--as are almost all of Dr. Z's amps. I don't play mine at home without the attenuator.

While you may not bleed out through your ears, I believe you'll find the Route 66 loud enough for most gigging situations. You can gig with all Z's, you just need to figure out if you need some cleans or how much dirt you want at the volume you'll be playing. ME

ME Yeah, not looking to bleed, just want to make sure there's enough clean headroom there.

Probably as much as a JTM 45... cleans aren't what they are noted for π ME

Probably as much as a JTM 45... cleans aren't what they are noted for π ME True, but I've heard some really great sound clips of the JTM45 mostly clean, edge of breakup, tweed flavor. Not really expecting a Blackface. Was just curious if the 66 was similar, although I think the 66 uses an EF86, whereas the JTM uses standard 12ax7s.

Tweedish is how the Route 66 sounded some of the recordings we made of our jams and gigs when I had it. It was a little wild until I got a Brake Lite. I traded it for an Antidote π Which went to a MAZ 8 (and a MINI Z) ππ Now I have a Remedy. I think I'll stay here for a while. It is, to me a search for what sounds right for the situation your in. Never a final thing for me π€£ππ€£π ME

Depends on where you set the tone controls. noon or below, the headroom is decent. Same as my other 30 watt amps. Bass and treble above 3oclock it gets dirty pretty fast. Lots of clean headroom for gigs if you keep that in mind. You can also switch out the rectifier for a GZ34 and rebias for volume and headroom if needed.

Plenty of volume and as was stated ^^^ dial in the tone controls for what you desire.

I've read that the EFs combined with the KTs can be difficult to tame.

I have a Therapy now, and I think the 'bass' control sounds more like a low mid boost instead, so I really have to roll it back to stay clean and clear. Also, I put a Genalex GZ34 in the rec, and that seems to have given me a bit more clarity.

When you switch out 5U4 for a GZ34 in the Route 66, you get a fair bit more wattage from the increased plate voltage, it goes from 32 watts up to 40-45 watts. Less sag, but brighter, tighter and more headroom.
You do need to rebias, however.
I've had two, the first one was an older interstate model (1997), it was inherently a bit looser sounding and darker (despite having a GZ34) the newer one (2016) is a bit brighter and has a bit more headroom (even with the 5U4)
Its a great pedal amp, but I tend to run it cleanish (bass treble at noon, volume at 11-12 o'clock) with pedals. With that range you get a good clean tone, you can even boost your cleans a bit, but you can also get a big volume boost if needed with pedals. It loves fuzz pedals, they all sound good. I've been through a bunch of pedals over the years, I'm currently using a Cornish SS-3 for light dirt and a G-2 for distortion. For fuzz I have an EQD Hoof and AM Sunbender MK 1.5. The Timmy also sounds stellar with this amp.

Regarding pedals: I guess it is a great idea to get a pedal to get the overdrive/distortion/fuzz that you want. I've experienced and seen too many bad stories about how players buy amps expecting for the ultimate distortion, and then they are disappointed. I'd rarely rely on an amp for the ultimate overdrive sound I'm looking for. BUY THE PEDAL!!

Personally I can't handle the volume of my 66 at 9 p.m. the volume dial. It's too loud. I always use an attenuator on all my Z amps. They aren't for the home bedroom kind of guy. Maybe the mini is butnwvem thatvcan be gigged. All Dr z amps are extremely loud.

Yea, I'm learning that too, but my Therapy can be tamed, and I do get great sounds at low volumes (might have something to do with the ppim). I've turned it up a few times at home, and whoa, it's like getting hit with a Mack truck, even clean because I don't use it for overdrive. I always max the master and then adjust the volume. What a rush, BOOM!!! I saw my neighbor looking over the fence - he didn't have his shotgun, but he wasn't smiling either ; )

I just put the GZ34 back in "#5" to get a bit more headroom. I still run an AirBrake two clicks down. What a glorious sound!
