I currently have my z-28 in a 1x10 combo with a gold and I love the way it sounds, but I keep reading how a 1x12 adds more depth to tone. I'm selling a few things to fund a new purchase. Im considering either a custom Mather 1x12 combo cab or a new delay pedal wit a tap tempo (el cap, nemesis, or dig). I limit my gear spending as much as possible and I tend to sell things to fund other things. I have about $300 to spend. Just curious to know what you guys would do. Portability is important to me, and I prefer to keep the z28 in a combo cab.

I'd go with the 112 cab, but get a speaker cab not a combo. I know you said you would like to stay with a combo. The 110 combo is only a little taller than a head. You get the best of all worlds this way. Set it on the speaker cab for when you want a 12. You've got a grab and go with the 110 combo and when you really want to have fun, set the combo on the cab, get a Y-cable and run the 10 and the 12 together. A 10 and 12 together is a great combination. Only a few manufacturers have made that combination, but it gives you the punch of the 10 and the depth of the 12. Then look for a used delay pedal.

Some genres of music really require a delay with a tap-tempo switch. If you are playing any of those, and I'm betting you do or you wouldn't be asking this, then you have more need of the delay. After all, you have stated that you love the way your amp sounds currently and there is no guaranty that you are going to like it any better through a 12" speaker.

There is a company out there that makes a little device that can give your non-tap tempo delay pedal some control over the tempo. I use it for my Greer Black Tiger delay to change basic speeds settings when I want a longer delay, vs shorter. It's not tap tempo, but it does give you an easy way to adjust the tempo with your foot while playing live. They cost about $10 OptionKnob.com

What kind of music do you play and what size venues. Dive bars, big rooms ect. I play a Z-28 1x10 combo with an Eminence Copperhead and it's loud.

I'm playing mostly at church with my 1x10 gold and our church seats about 500-600 people. There are times where we play bigger rooms and churches. I've been micing with an sm57 and it's been great. Just reading up on the forum people tend to prefer the 1x12 setup over the 1x10, and it seems they prefer it sonically...not just volume. As for delay, i currently have a carbon copy (which I love), but there have been a good number of times where I wish I had a tap tempo when playing live. I'm willing to put the tap tempo delay on hold if the 1x12 set up is going to be that much of an improvement in my sound. headshrinker (Marc): i've strongly considered just adding a 1x12 cab. Thanks for confirming that it's a good option. Might be too much though for now. Rockerfeller: thanks, i think i prefer the tap.

I like a 1x10 a bunch but the 1x12 would probably do what you want. If you could borrow a cab from somebody to check it out before you spend money that would be cooll. I've been down the rabbit hole many times.
Cheers, Richard
