This is the THIRD time now that I've had noise issues with my DB4 in a relatively short period of time. I'm starting to lose patience. Issue #1: ztalk.proboards.com/thread/74776/identify-issue-db4Issue #2: ztalk.proboards.com/thread/75157/bad-power-tubeIssue #3: Okay - the amp has suddenly (and I mean no prior warning signs - as in it seemed to work normally just a couple days ago) started hissing like an angry Dragon. And rather than me describing it, I've attached videos below. Let me answer some questions first. Yes - I tried a different speaker cable. Yes - I tried it in a different room. Yes - I tried a different power cord. Yes - I tried letting the amp warm up first. Yes - I tried NOT letting the amp warm up first. Yes - I tried it with guitars plugged in and out. Yes - the power tubes are new as of Issue #2. Here's the videos "explaining" the noises: HELP!!!

Sounds like the second tube from the right is microphonic when you tap it in the third clip. . Frying bacon sounds are usually a tube issue.

Here's 3 videos of different 12 AX7s. The first 2 are GT and the 3rd is a Sovtek: You'll notice the 12AX7 swaps make no difference in the noise issue. Of course, I might be misunderstanding which tube you guys are talking about! I just want to rock out like Frank!

First and foremost, follow this guide. Also, leave your guitar unplugged from the amp. This guide will help narrow down where the sound is coming from, be it power section or preamp section: drzamps.com/info/faq-troubleshoot/The first tube is usually the loudest and most susceptible to microphony. Try a new 5879, the first tube, and also try to clean each socket with contact cleaner.

Well, if you keep tapping them like that, of course they're going to go microphonic!!! My Maz made that exact sound not too long ago. It was a microphonic tube, and I somehow had my delay plugged into a non-isolated power jack, so the noise was completely exaggerated. Are you running power straight from the wall? Could be dirty power, too.

I did run power straight from the wall for testing. In any event, all signs point to the 5879, so I've got a new one on the way - and from a source that I definitely trust! Will update here after I get to check it out.

Don't spray the sockets. Some cleaners might degrade the socket itself. I only use DeOxit cleaner, no other brands. Spray the pins on the tube, gently insert and pull out the tube a few times. Don't wiggle the tube because you can stress or break the tube pins and/or loosen the socket contacts.

Yes and yes. Set the can nozzle on the "low" setting and with the tube sockets facing up at you , give each little opening a quick shot. And / or spray the tube pins so they have a droplet of the cleaner on them and insert/remove twice. Don't wiggle any more than you would during normal removal. EDIT: Ken , it looks like we posted at the same time. Deoxit is good , and Electrosolve won't harm plastics either.

You guys were all correct. A new 5879 sorted it out. Thanks all for your help!

Glad to hear your issue was resolved! Me too! After I put the new tube in I went all Frank on it (you know - up to 11 ) and played with my Tele straight in for a good while. Aw man was that ever sweet.

There's been a little noise in my DB4 since the first day I got too. However, it's not bad yet and I was pretty sure it was likely the 5879.
I should order a couple new tubes and swap it out to see if that helps, I guess.

Hmm. My Monza head did something similar last night mid-gig, only without the high-pitched thing. Everything was great but then all of a sudden it started acting like something was interfering (like the noise caused by a cell phone interfering with it). Weird thing is that after the noise died out I would play and then as soon as the bass player played it acted up, or if I played and tapped on top of the amp it would do it. Couldn't figure it out so I had to use a back up the rest of the night. Although at the break time after it had been off for a while I tried it again. Started the last set with the Monza and it was fine for a few minutes but then went haywire again. Would even do the noise with nothing plugged it. Plugged in my setup into the backup head and not one problem. So bummed.....
