I also asked this about the cure, but would REALLY like to know about the maz 8. i'm a humbucker guy, and i play ALOT of rhythm in the middle and neck positions. with alot of small bottle power tube amps, the problem i run into is the amps low ends get flabby in these positions. not playing clean, but with medium or high gain. i don't have this problem nearly as much with my big bottle (el34) amps. how does the maz 8's low end hold up WITH HUMBUCKERS FOR RHYTHM in the middle and neck positions?

I think it holds up well if you stick with a ceramic speaker. I don't think of flab when I think of any Maz series amp, unless it's paired with a Blue or Gold.
EDIT: And use the Lo input.

Helmi,
I too use the low input, I have the Z-12 in my Maz 8. I have the li'l 59 by SD in the bridge position of my Tele and I have never used flabby as an adjective describing my tone.
Maybe my playing, but not my tone!

I have the Maz 8 you see at the left. I ordered it with a G12M65 Creamback. I play a 2007 LP Studio with BB Pro rhythm & lead on the low input. I play all 3 switch positions... they all sound great. Plenty of solid low end available by turning the bass knob. I usually run it anywhere from 10 to 3. I use the VBFS, and amp volumes to get various amounts of overdrive. Tame it with a brake lite. I also use a Blue Note and Gain Changer to get OD. The amp OD is just slightly better than pedal OD. No flab, no flub, just tons of tone.

It depends on how hard you're going to drive the amp. At deafening volumes and with high gain, an 8-watt EL84 amp is never going to sound massive in the low end. That's why they still build 100W 6L6 and EL34 amps and 4x12" cabs.
As long as it's clean enough to have some headroom, it's very quick and precise in the bass, especially in pentode mode. And through a mic it's always going to sound fantastic.

I use a Z-12 in my Maz 8 and I love it. It sounds nice and fat, good treble without bite, nice balanced upfront midrange. I much prefer it to the G12H30. No flab here with my Les Paul, either. Plus it's efficient, and I still use my Brake Lite at home. I gigged it several times with the big band last year and it's easily up to the task.

A lot of that flab you have experienced with small bottle amps is due to small transformers. The iron in my MAZ 8 is plenty heavy. Almost as much iron as a MAZ 18. I'm happy with mine but still, it is only an 8 watt amp. Don't expect miracles.

Just what I wanted to know. Thanks!!!

No flab with a Celestion Blue here. I use the head with a Z 1x12 cab, open back. Tight, tight, tight....

No flab here with humbuckers through the standard H30.
But then, I have aways liked the H30 and I'm used to it.

I'm happy with mine but still, it is only an 8 watt amp. Don't expect miracles. Also, Doc uses a TON of filtering in the power section which will also tighten up the low end. Aside from the many features (full tone stack, loop, verb, triode/pentode, and cut) the build quality and robust power and output sections distinguish this from any other single-ended amp on the market. It's worlds away from any of the SE projects you may encounter on the net and serves many applications exceptionally well. It's a tough design to get right and requires many expensive components to achieve that level of quietness, punch, and harmonic content. Sad to see it leave the production line; get them while you can. Definitely one of a kind!
