I have always set my one channel amps basic tone during sound check and leave it alone. Except for changing the volume, I don't change the gain stage of the amp. I prefer to have a basic clean / on the edge of breakup tone and then get more dirt from a pedal. That is how I use the ZLux. BUT cranking the gain on this amp sounds so good it is making my consider changing my ways. It is more of a hassle to run back and change an amps setting to go from clean to a lot more dirty in between songs, which is why I don't do it. But I am tempted.....very tempted.
I wanted to find out what you guys do live. So the poll question is focused more on gain. Do you set it and forget it and use pedals for dirt or do you tweek your amp for different dirt tones?

Depends on the night. I use pedals generally, but there are times when I can't be satisfied. I usually just want to be louder than the rest of the band 😉😱😎 ME

Pretty much set & forget unless the situation (crowd size , etc) during the night calls for a change.

I set it and forget it. I just use the guitar volume and tone controls to get the shades I am looking for.

I am pretty much a set it and forget it too. I only take my pedal board occasionally. Most the time I just plug straight in and have my EQ bypass engaged. I have it at about half way. Volume at 12 Treble at 11 mid's and bass at 1 master at 12-1 -2 depending on how loud the hammond B3 is on any given day. I have my reverb set at about 9 o'clock and my trem is completely off. I just ride the volume knob on my guitar and use my tone knobs to get what I want. I have found that just plugging straight in is about as pure of a tone I can get. I play pretty clean. But sometimes like if Im in a revival I will bring the pedals. I like fuzz and overdrive and a boost and some delay and wah once in a while.
But the amp sounds so rich its just good on its own for me.

I use my Z Drive alot to change my amp tone and gain levels. I used to use the amp controls alot during service but the Z drive gives me the amp like OD sounds I really like and then allows me to have 3 channels to choose from. Bypass for just the amp setting, green for like to medium OD depending on my guitar volume and the red side is set up for heavier gain and a darker tone. God bless, Todd

I have to cover such a wide variety of clean to Dirty tones, that my amp alone, can't do it If I just set it and forget it. I typically set the volume around 10 o'clock and use my Greer Lightspeed for more dirt. BUT, playing my ZLux at the home studio this week made me realize that setting the volume at around 3 o'clock get's a gorgeous rock tone! That got me thinking about finding the levels where the clean and dirty tone of the Lux would be equal so I could quickly change it on stage. It looks like very few people, according to our scientific poll, actually do that.

I usually set and forget BOTH my amp AND the pedals. OD pedals stay the same gig to gig. Reverb and delays get adjusted to the room. Once everything is set I use the tone control on the guitar and that is all.

This; and I constantly ride the guitar's volume knob. I guess I left that out. Me too. And I have a volume pedal. That is what I do too. I have to admit, that I do tweak the Tremolo on the ZLux all night, because sometimes you want it fast, sometimes slow and sometimes more or less throboliciousness. If I didn't use a dirt pedal, then I would have to figure how to quickly change my Zlux from a Country Clean to a Rock tone and back. I watched Brad Paisley's rig run down a while back and he's got a different amp for all his different tone needs. That has to be nice!

As others have said, guitar volume, tone and pickup selector plus pedal options gets me through the gig.
Often we're so cramped for space, even though we're only a 4-person band (two guitars, bass and drums), I would have to be a contortionist to reach the amp. (It gets set into place early and other gear and cables tend to create a barrier.)

If I bring my pedal board I hardly have any room at all. I would like to use my board more but sometimes I just want a little more space. I think I may be closterphobic.😜

I really depends on wether or not I'm changing guitars out a lot that night, and in one perticular case....if there's another guitar player. I usually just set it and forget it,Amp and the few pedals I use. However, if I'm switching out a lot between the Telecaster, 6-string Bass,Les Paul,Rickenbacker, ect. I'm often adjusting the Cut for each guitar. If I'm playing and, like the other night,a certain guitar player is onstage as well, I'm having to adjust all night. Nice dude, but plays wayyyyy too loud, has a piercing SS tone, and has no concept of uniform gain when it comes to his pedalboard. Hits one of his Overdrives and his level changes so much, not to mention EQ, it becomes a nightmare. Ideally, it's a set and forget kinda deal. Mabey adjust my Delay a smidge,if we do say,a U2 number.

I am pretty much a set it and forget it type. I set my amp volume for the room clean, and then adjust dirt pedals to a bit over unity gain and go with it. I never touch my delay. The only thing I might mess with is the speed of the trem. I might have to adjust volume here or there, but not much usually. Every band I have played in usually gets louder as the night goes on, so you have to watch that as well.

Ride that Guitar Volume all night and you can get whatever you want out of the Z-lux.

Ride that Guitar Volume all night and you can get whatever you want out of the Z-lux. After three gigs with the Z-Lux and NO dirt pedals, I agree. I didn't need dirt pedals to get a great classic rock or a clean tone. I did need to make more use of my compressor to tame the volume when I wanted max dirt from the amp for rhythm stuff. I just set the compressor below unity gain for that and it worked great.
