I use a Timmy on my larger gigging board and love the pedal. But I have a small 3 pedal board Tone Press, Gain Changer and Delay; that is what I use in church in front of my Ghia. I'm going to pull the Gain Changer and was all set to order another Timmy when a couple of recent Z-Drive posts got me thinking. I can add a little more EQ to the Ghia with the Z-Drive and vary the shades of dirt. I like the transparency, smoothness, soft subtle hair on the notes of the Timmy.
Can anyone comment on a comparison of the two? Can I get a nice smooth bit of hair on either side? I thought maybe I could run one side on all the time and hit the other side for juicier single note lines. Watching Frankie's demo's has got me thinking.
You Z-Drive owners might be able to school me. It is double the price of the Timmy, but it may just be worth it.

Green side is very Timmy(probably better, IMO). Red will give you a good thick drive. Green side could easily be a always on pedal.
This is based off the Tim I own so take that for what it is worth.

I've owned both. Ran them with a Ghia and mostly a Tele at lower stage volumes. I agree with your comment on the subtlety of the Timmy, that's what keeps me using it. The EQ on the Z-Drive is amazing. I did try to run it with the green always on and hit the red for a boost, but I couldn't get the red drive channel to jive with the rest of my set-up without adjustment. The Z-Drive also has a good amount of volume on tap. I had to keep the level controls pretty low with the drive increased. Awesome pedal, just didn't quite work for me at that time and place.

Z Drive all the way. I had a Timmy for a bit, and liked it for pushing fuzz pedals, but by itself, I found this weird thing going on with the note decay that I just couldn't get past. The green side of the Z Drive is an awesome low gainer.

I have the Timmy and, like you, I tend to use it for a bit of boost and/or to add some grit. The Z-Drive has more personality sound wise but it takes more effort to learn and tweak. I didn't have both at the same time so I never tested them side by side. The Timmy may be potentially smoother, depending on the setting. The Z-Drive has great control over EQ, the best of any OD pedal I've owned. And the overall tone of the ZD is very 3-D to me. The Red side has a nice grit and compression, which can get raspy -in a good way.
A couple of things that didn't work for me on the ZD were it's battery consumption and that the EQ can't be independently set for each channel (other than the Cut switches). But those things probably wouldn't bother many people.

I hadn't considered battery consumption. I've been powering with a powertrain Volto, so I haven't thought much about batteries. But I might want to consider whether I'll drain the volts with the Belle Epoch and this running. How bad is the consumption?

The Z-Drive current consumption is 30 mA according to the manual. By comparison my King of Tone is rated at 6-10 mA draw. In real life the ZD consumption on batteries was similar to running a digital delay on batteries - which is why I always use a power supply with my Boss DD-2.

I also found that when the battery was almost done there was little warning and then the pedal would start squealing. I keep a battery in there only for backup purposes now and keep it plugged in whenever possible.
Love the pedal though. Combined with my EQ bypass I have tons of options (well 6 anyway). Never tried a Tim or variant though.
