Besides the schematic differences(master, level, effects loop, etc), any ideas on differences in tone/style between these two?
Can't decide. I've wanted a Z28 for a long time. But the Cure looks right up my alley as well

If someone did a Venn Diagram of the Therapy, Z28 and Cure, I'm sure there would be quite a bit of overlap.
I'm going to get to play one today, finally. I'm pretty pumped.

I disagree with the similarity to the Z28 for a couple of reasons:
The '28 has an EF86 pre amp which is more percussive and snappy to my ear than a 12AX7 preamp tube.
The '28 has a baxandall tone stack vs the TMB stack of the Cure
The '28 has a simpler V/T/B layout which interacts differently than the level, VTMB, Master layout of the Cure.
Lastly, the iron (transformer) for each are markedly different I believe. The '28 is boss and large and from what I've read about the Cure it's similar in design to the old Deluxe transformer which would make it smaller in size than the '28's iron.
The Cure is an interesting amp I need to play for myself b/c when I get my next Z amp it'll be a '28 again unless the Cure just knocks my socks off but I also pine for a Z-28 in a 1/12 studio cab and that hasn't happened, yet......

Yeah I was curious of the difference in tone the ef86 brings to the table

...its been a while since i've owned a Z-28 but the Cure is a substantially different sounding amp...way more sounds to be coaxed from it and closer in nature to 6v6 blackface amps when set for cleans...really to my ears its got its own thing going on as do all the Z's i've had....i guess thats why many players own multiple Z's...the one thing Doc don't do is redundancy...

I've had two Maz Jrs....and the following EF86 amps:
Z28 Route 66 Two Stangrays
So I'm familiar with the feel of the EF86, and the tone stack of the Maz.
I would imagine the Cure is very different from the Z-28. Doc's amps with the EF86 really do have a different attack/dynamic. Neither better nor worse...just different.
I would say the Cure is more a 'traditional' type amp. (if that's what you're looking for) The Z28 is different...wonderful, but different.

I owned a Z28 and currently own a Therapy. Most of the tones in the Z28 can be found in the Therapy. The feel is where they differ. The Therapy, is much, much more forgiving. You don't know how sloppy of a guitar player you are until you play an EF86 type amp. Owning a Z28 and a Maz 38 really made me a better guitar player.
As John said, not good or bad, just different.

You don't know how sloppy of a guitar player you are until you play an EF86 type amp. Well put. An ef86 amp will 'amplify' every nuance of your playing. (get it?...see what I did there?) If you are sloppy, it will come through. If you are precise, it will come through. There is no hiding with an ef86 amp. It made me a better player. If you are a sloppy player, you will hate the amp. If you are a precise player, you will love it because it shows off your articulation. If you are in the middle, it will make you a better player. Once you get used to it, you can use this feature as a musical expression.

I would like to own an EF86 amp again someday. And a 5879 amp, to boot. All great flavors.

I really like the Z28 when I owned it. Agree with everything that has been said.

Z28 is one of the best amps Doc has ever made............unique in every way............small wattage but you need your big boy pants on to play it well..............it stands alone, despite the Therapy getting close in tone, but not in feel. Therapy forgives and flatters. Z28 demands your full attention, but when you step up, it delivers!
I imagine the Cure will be a superb amp, but not that much like the Z28.........just my thoughts only.
