....The Cure I ordered back on the first day they became available for preorder has finally made its way to Oregon. I got to run it for a couple of hours yesterday...which was good because you need a lot of time to discover the crazy variety of tones that can be had out of this amp. This is the 9th different Z model i've owned...(but i've had 5 Ghias and 2 Z-28's).
....Yep the Deluxe/Princeton tones are in there and are very easy to get...crank the master and set the volume and level to desired volume and you're in blackface country....the cleans are sparkly and theres no lack of girth unless you're comparing it to 6L6 based blackface which was not the Docs intention....super fine pedal platform. Really as good an amp for pedals as any i've ever owned. I'm currently using a Barber BUSS Direct Drive and it sounds great in front of the Cure. The tone controls are fairly subtle but like all Z's affect tone differently than most amps in that they add a little something extra other than frequency boost.
....From there the amp gets into a lot of uncharted territory. just stepping on the boost pedal and bypassing the tone stack sends it into tweedland...start tweaking the volume and master and as my pop used to say "Katie bar the door". Honestly i haven't been able to pin down exactly what i'm hearing....the myriad demos that are already out...(has a new amp ever got this much attention??) do an excellent job of showcasing the Cures' versatility...and it certainly is a tone chameleon.
...I did put my Flint in the effects loop to try it out and it sounded great. Not much different than placing it front with rest of my pedals as i have found with all the effect loops i've used...so i'll probably just keep my pedalboard out front like i always do. The Z 12 is a new speaker to me and I really really like it. I also ran the Cure with a 1-12 extension loaded with a Crex and a 2-10 loaded with a Weber 10F150 and an Emi 1028...both sounded great as extension cabs but the Z12 was the clear winner by itself. I may have to add a Z 1-12 extension cab with matching cosmetics.
...Speaking of cosmetics....the Cure is a badass looking amp...kinda matches the amps attitude...i'd take its look over pretty much anything else....thanks to Z and his crew for creating yet another fine piece of gear....can't wait to play this one out with the fellas next week.....
