I just took a look at it. One thing to note is that it doesn't do speaker emulation, so you would need to run it into something to get a decent sound which you might already know. I haven't used the Suhr, but I can pass along a little experience. I messed with using a Weber speaker motor as a reactive load and then tried EQs, Palmer DI box, and Hughes and Kettner Red Box speaker emulator for my sound. I did multiple rehearsals with the set ups. I've since settled on using my Air Brake at max attenuation into a speaker and mic'ing it. I'd argue that with the AirBrake on max attenuation, my amp is seeing a mostly a static load. The point I'm getting towards is that my Ghia and Maz Jr have been fine. I didn't run into any issues. I think you would be good with the Suhr or other reactive load types. Here's another option to consider. For my home setup, I have a Randall Iso Cab in my basement. I get to crank my amps and get a great real speaker sound in my headphones. If you have some space or somewhere to drop the cab a little out of ear shot, it's a good option. I see there are some less expensive models out there now. They do generate some noise, so they have to be placed out of the way to not disturb the family. Good Luck! I also see more speaker emulator/load boxes out on the market these days.

I've been using my Suhr reactive load with my Ghia and other amps for a couple years now. It's fantastic. As Mike said, it's just a load. To get good sounds out of it, you'll need some sort of speaker emulation, whether through IRS on your computer, or a separate device. I use mine for recording all the time, and for practicing along with jam tracks at a reasonable level. You can pipe the whole thing through headphones if you want, making practice silent. I have not thrown a mic in front of an amp in a while now.
On a computer setup, it will look something like this: amp>Suhr RL>interface> DAW>IR. I can help if this is the road you go.

Ah! IRS = "Impulse Responses". I was thinking maybe the IRS had a new rebate going on with taxes to send me a guitar speaker. I've got to take a look. I don't think there was anything around when researching this 8 or 10 years ago. I plugged in "IRS" and "Guitar" on google and hit the Celestion impulse responses. Interesting. Adam - What software do you load them into? I'll have to see if any of the plug-ins I have in my Sonar s/w will take them. I still have my weber speaker motor sitting in the closet, so I could fire it up pretty quickly after blowing off the dust. Actually, I'll walk that statement back. I'll have to remember whether I have a pad already made to send the amp's output into my mixer or whether that's something I would need. I can just imagine the nice puff of smoke coming from my mixer. - Update - I can load them into my Perfect Space module in Sonar. Cool!

Yeah, that was supposed to read IRs. Stupid autocorrect. I bought a whole suite of them from a company called Redwirez (you have no idea the pain typing the plural "z" causes me). They included a convolver (plugin to load these in your DAW) with the suite. So, I can play my Ghia through a Greenback-loaded Marshall basket weave cab, closemiked with a Shure SM-57. You can blend different mics, or even different cabs together for whatever sound you want. My usual fave with the Ghia is through a Vox 2x12 with Silvers with a 50/50 mix of a SM57 tight on the cap edge, and a Royer 121 a bit further back.
I don't have the ability to compare the real thing to the same cab/mic IR, but the tones you can get are really good, useful tones. Like I said, I haven't thrown a mic in front of an amp in a long time. If you look at my soundcloud page, everything I've done in the past year plus is an IR. Including the bass (the SVT 8x10 IR is really cool with a U47 mic).
Plus, you can record a track while monitoring with an IR on, and if you decide later that it doesn't sit in the mix right, you can switch the cab/mic IR do one that fits better. For this home recordist , it makes the process much faster and easier.

I should also note the the Suhr>IR route FEELS awesome to play through. You can clean up with your guitar volume, or by lightening your right hand attack. I've never gotten a modeler to feel right, so this is a real step forward. You can probably tell I love this thing. Best purchase I've made in a long time.

Fantastic!!! I ordered the Suhr. It will be here tomorrow.
I have a Scarlett 18i8 interface running into GarageBand (though I'm considering upgrading to Logic). I have the Redwirez IRs as well as some Ownhammers and a few of the new Celestion IRS they just released. Really looking forward to hearing my Maz through them (and my 90s AC15!)

Shouldn't be an issue. I imagine loading IRs into GB is more or less the same as doing it in logic. The SRL works great on both tube amps that I have. I'm intrigued that Celestion is offering IRs of its own speakers. I wonder if they agree that IRs are a viable representation of their recorded sound?

OK, I just bought the Creamback 2x12 and 4x12 IRs. I had a Creamback loaded cab I liked with my Ghia a while back. If you (anyone reading this) are new to this, check this video Pete Thorn did for Celestion on their IRs. Warning: Pete Thorn makes everything sound fantastic.

Got my Reactive Load yesterday. Been playing around with it today. I really like it with single coils. For some reason I cannot get a good clean tone with either my Les Paul or 335. Has a really fizzy sound to it through Logic. I'll have to mess around with it. Have to turn Vol almost all the way down on my Maz and master up to get the right tone and even then it's fizzy.

Are you monitoring with an IR on in Logic? I ask because the sound of the SRL DI output is pretty crispy with no cab sim. It might be less noticeable with lower output pickups (single coils).

Also, make sure you have the mix of the IR vs. the dry signal set to 100% wet. If you're using the MixIR2 convolver that came with the Redwirez suite, it's the red knob on the bottom.

Hey, thanks, man! I'm much more of a home recordist than a gigging player these days. (eh, who am I kidding - its been a couple years since I've played music with others) Wife, kid, house, job, etc. It's all I can do to be a little creative, and post a few tunes from time to time. I have this little fantasy I'll be able to put together enough material for the www.rpmchallenge.com/ in February, but its going to be tough. I have a few ideas percolating, though, so you never know!

62stratdoc - how's it working out? I had some time last night to mess around with the Celestion Creamback M IRs I picked up. Pretty cool! Not as many mic choices/placements at the RedWirez stuff I have, but the room mic IR is really cool when blended with one of the close mic options. Really gives more of a "hearing the amp" vibe in comparison to hearing what the mic hears. Almost sounds like a hint of reverb. Cool. I'm hoping to finish up a couple tunes this weekend. I'll post them when I'm done.

I've been playing around quite a bit with them. It's a lot of fun and sounds quite good. I have come to realize that the Maz breaks up a LOT earlier than it sounds like it's breaking up when not mic'ed or run into the Reactive Load. Breakup starts about 9 o'clock. It became audible about 10:30 when just running through the speakers.
Anyway, I'm really liking the Ownhammer IRs. They have a British set coming out soon according to their Facebook page.

I know most people say the Maz 38 is a clean amp, but when I first got it, I couldn't get a pure clean sound out of it with the volume up past 9 o'clock. Also, my p90's were pushing the front end harder than most single coils. Anyhow, I swapped v1 out for a 5751 and found the volume knobmuch more manageable. It lowered the overall volume of the amp a little(which is appreciated) and gave a bigger "clean range" to the volume control without really changing the tone of the amp. Now I consider my 38 a "clean" amp, but it still can get dirty just by kicking up the volume knob. I love this amp!
