Does anyone have any experience with adding a variable power switch to an amp? I have a Maz 38 NR which I hardly ever get to push the volume with in the venues I play. A local amp tech (which is an authorised Dr Z service provider) has an option to install a variable power control so it can go anywhere from 1/2 watt to 38. Doing this is half the price of an attenuator and tech says is better for tubes. Is this a good idea or will it change anything for the worse? Thanks

I don't have experience or know anything about this mod, but from one Maz 38 owner to another, i'd definitely recommend getting a brake lite. I can't imagine playing my 38 without the brake lite. It's an amazing tool. As far as the brake lite being hard on tubes, i don't think it causes any problems. The only thing you don't want to do with the brake lite is have it on 4 clicks and constantly dime the amp, i believe that'll put more stress on the output transformer. Maybe someone else will chime in on this. Anyway, the brake lite doesn't change the tone or your amp, only the feel of it slightly because you aren't moving as much air, and to me it can sound a little more compressed with the brake lite on 3 or 4 clicks. But seriously, get a brake lite, it's an amazing tool! Here's a good thread about the brake lite. Read it all. It'll clear some things up.

Also, check out the buy sell trade section. Brake lites show up for good prices every once in a while. Or look around on Reverb, you should be able to find one for a good price. To me though, i wouldn't shy away from paying full price for one, it's THAT worth it to me!

If you are really considering the mod, with out a doubt, contact the Doc's shop and talk to someone about the mod, or have the dealer contact the shop and see if it's a good idea or not.

Are you talking about "power scaling"? Yes, I would definitely get Dr Z Service's input on that. I'm pretty sure it will void the warranty.
