Here's what I would have to use for an acoustic solo PA if I didn't get anything new:
Carvin PA head. Fantastic unit for what it is. 12 channels, two monitor mixes (w power), built in effects, graphic eq for left/right FOH and each monitor mix has it's own graphic eq! Four built in power amps! Sub out, phantom power....an impressive unit! But it's overkill, and with the road case, weighs about 55lbs. This would be used with two 1x15 cabinets (almost 40lbs each). And the only monitors I have are 1x12. (probably 35lbs?)
So I've bought this:
The two towers are Alto Troupers. 3x6.5" speakers with horn. Built in 3 channel mixer w line out, built in 200 watt power amp, blue tooth your phone/ipod. 23lbs each! The speaker on top is a 1x8" 140 watt powered speaker I'll use as a monitor. 12lbs! Daisy chain everything. I got to hook it all up yesterday, and it all works as I thought it would. (Meaning not only does everything work, but the tone and control over everything is decent.) There's a BOSS pedal on top of the left tower to give you a frame of reference.
Here's another pic with a guitar for frame of reference. This will all fit easily in my little hatchback.
Here's a pic of the 1x8 monitor compared to the 1x15 cab
If I was a younger man, I'd keep/use (at least for a while) the big and heavy PA, but I'm sick of humpin heavy/bulky gear. I'm at a station in life where I can spend a little for convenience in weight and size. Besides, I'll sell the PA head and the two 1x15 cabs...that will pay for what I just bought. I went to check out a local acoustic solo place last night. And it was upstairs. And I thought....man, hauling that PA head and those two 1x15 up this flight of stairs? Not for me!
Those tower speaker for FOH have a surprising amount of bass. I thought they'd be thin. Not deep thumping bass, but for vocals, I actually have to turn the bass down.
Will this be crushing loud? No, but it's an acoustic solo...it's not supposed to be.
