I was going to unmount my brake lite from the cabinet and use it as a stand alone until I read that you're not supposed to do that. any reason why? So now Im looking at picking up the new black brake lite SA box so I can use it with all my amps. question is, on my old white BL I only have 1 output for the speaker, and I see on the new black box sa they have 2 out puts for speakers. Im assuming thhe extra output is for if yo uwant to run 2 cabinets together instead of just 1? If I got the new sa would it matter which output I used? would it hook up just as my older white one thats mounted in my 1x12?

Yup two speaker outs, one input. No worries about which one to use alone, either, which is why they aren't labeled.
I have seen people use the standard brake-lite freestanding, usually screwed to a base of some sort.

On the Z site it says, "...The Brake Lite SA works with any tube amp up to 45 watts and can be used with 4, 8, or 16, ohm loads. The SA features 2 speaker outs that are wired in parallel. You can now run multiple cabs with ease..."
So you should make sure if you plug two cabs in there, you consider the impedance. Two 8 ohm cabs plugged into the BLSA would be a 4 ohm load, so you'd plug the Brake Lite into your 4 ohm output on the amp. Similarly, two 16 ohm cabs would equal an 8 ohm load.

D'oh! Thanks for correcting my brain fart - I knew that, not sure what I was thinking... Excuse me while I go sit in the corner...

Jeff, I think the main concern with using the non-SA BrakeLite unmounted is the possibility that the heat generated could damage, say, the tolex covering on an amp. As limenine mentioned, there's no reason you can't mount the non-SA BL on a piece of wood and then set it on top of an amp. Fwiw, before the SA came out, I often set my BL on top of my MAZ 18 without ill effect. MAZ wasn't cranked, though.

I used mine yesterday for about an hour sitting on top of my amp and kept checking it for heat and it was fine. no heat at all. But I will more than likely mount it on something.
