My wife loves to bake. Especially this time of year. So last week I was in Cleveland for some family matters and she sent me up with some white chocolate, macadamia nut cookies to drop by the mothership. While I was there Mike said, hey want to see what I've got coming out? I of course said , no I have plenty of equipment and never need to look at another piece. Or maybe it was hell yes!
The Cure is a really cool amp. You're going to want one. I got to run the same guitar you see Dave Baker playing on the teaser video through it. For some reason the licks I played weren't nearly as good. But... the amp sounded stellar.
As has been said, it's a full featured amp, at a killer price. It's definitely in the Fender camp with lots of sweet 6V6 output. The level control really makes this a bedroom to stage amp. Get the sound and balance you want between the preamp and power tubes and then you can dial it back to the level you want without a change in sound. There may be a tactile kinetic difference, since you aren't moving as much air, but the sound is the same. The studio cab makes the amp relatively light and gives it a smaller footprint, so it's going to be great for throwing in the car and going to jam night. Taxi friendly if you are in a big city. Take up about the same space as a Blues jr. or Princeton, but with full Dr. Z tone. The bypass pedal with the volume up makes the thing sing with a ton of sustain. Unlike a Princeton or Deluxe, the low end stays tight at all volume levels. If you miss the reverb, stick it in the effects loop and you should be fine. Didn't run any pedals through it. Now that I think about it, never messed with the settings on the BMT. I played and Mike dialed the knobs and I think it was mainly the volume, master and level controls. I was too busy having fun. We also didn't play with the amount of bypass, leaving it at full on.
There have been a good number of folks asking for a low powered Z-Lux. You've got it here. Start saving your pennies. Remember it comes in any color, as long as it's black with Z-Wreck grill cloth. Those of you who want a head, the studio cab is small enough that you can set it on a cab and it will be maybe twice as high as a head. Run a cable from the output jack to the cab and you are in business. Want to have more fun, get a Y cable and run the cab and the combo together for bigger gigs and you still have a grab and go for jam night.
