I see somebody on another forum has a 20th anniversary mini z for sale. Does this have the upgraded transformer? What year were these 20th models made?

2008 - and negatory on the transformer. Mine is an anniversary model, and has had the swap done by the previous owner.

Hello! New guy here. Just picked up a 20th Anniversary Mini Z head at local shop. Played it on a lark and took it home. Just learning about tranny change. I like it as is (or wouldn't have bought it). It's a lot louder than it has a right to be:) Also finding it can clean up pretty well backing off my guitar volume and as noted elsewhere, it does encourage using tone controls on your instrument.

Ive also read that if you swap out the ax7 tube and put in a 5751 or an au7 it helps tremendously with headroom

Certainly not cost-prohibitive. I'll give it a try. I was planning on swapping tubes anyway. Having no idea on the history of the amp, new tubes would give me a baseline to operate from. Current tubes are both JJ so they could be original? The amp is in pristine condition. Not a scratch on it.

I tried a 12au7 in mine once. It definitely quieted it down. It also made it sound terrible! I also tried a 12ay7 and 13at7...none of them sounded as good as the 12ax7.

Interesting...Terrible in what way? I'm curious. I've tried various 12AX7 substitutions in my Laney combo and though different, none were terrible.

I suppose I should clarify that I did not experiment with different brands or anything, though, just one and done. Therefore I can't say for sure if it was because it was "a" 12at7 or "that" 12at7. Cant hurt to give it a try, especially if you already have one.

A friend of mine is the tube scientist in my circle...different types/brands of preamp & power tubes. He has several amps and tube substituting (brands and types) vary in each amp...some improve tone, some degrade it. I'm more inclined to keep things simple though if something makes an improvement, awesome.

Replaced 12AX7 with a JJ 5751 and it indeed does help A LOT with headroom. Have a couple of other 5751s I'm going to try but this is a great substitution. Hard to believe how clean it can sound now up to between 9-10 on the volume just barely backing off on my guitar volume.

Doc's amps are all very sensitive to guitar volume roll-off
