I'm on the search for my first boutique amp and hoping it can be a Z. I already got some advice in the Mini Z forum. Right now I'm looking at < $1k. I like the simplicity of the Carmen Ghia and the videos I've heard. When I play out it is at my church. I can put the amp in the back closet and get it a bit louder than if it sat on stage with me. But with that in mind, currently I can just get into power tube breakup with my Vox AC4c1. Its fairly loud in the closet, but when the band is playing you only hear it through the PA (which is the point). So my question is, with an attenuator, can I get "edge of break up" tones from the Ghia in this scenario? The Mini Z would clearly work for this setting, but I'm not as sold on the tone as I am the Ghia. Thoughts?

The Brake Lite works great with the Ghia - you can still get that "edge of breakup" sound with the Brakelite. You can pick one up relatively inexpensively (about $150 or less if you're not in a hurry to get it - I got one for $100 from GC but I looked for a little while).

If you listen to "Every Time I Roll The Dice" on this page you'll hear a Ghia with Vol at 11 (o'clock) or a little lower with a Brake Lite set at 3. Les Paul into Xotic BB preamp to add gain and grit. The amp, me and the guy recording us were all in the same room, so the amp volume was quite sedate. (We're having an issue with the web site in some browsers: the icons for the music players don't show up. Try another browser if you experience a problem.)

Thanks for sharing the link. What speaker are you plugged into?

I know this is an older thread but I thought I’d throw out an experiment i tried this week. Maybe it’s dumb. You be the judge.
I recently acquired a Two Notes captor for recording at home. Love it for that. Then I was thinking about how the attenuator is ok but too much for my taste and isn’t variable. It’s a straight up -20db drop. Since the Captor also sports a dry line out with no cab emulation, I decided to try running that in to my Mooer Baby Bomb and see if that would sound good. To my ears it does and the volume control of the Baby Bomb sort of serves as a variable attenuator but without choking the Ghia. It’s receiving the full Ghia signal. I’m sure someone is going to point out there has to be some coloration added by the Baby Bomb but to my ears it’s minimal at worst. And I can get the 1x12 or 2x12 or 4x12 cab as quiet or as loud as I care to play it.
Is this dumb? I dunno. But I dig it so far.
Cheers, C

Actually, it's pretty clever working with what you have. Your Two Notes Captor gives you a load and cabinet modeling. You get your amplification with the Baby Bomb (which I had no idea what it was until I looked it up), and you adjust your actual volume via the Baby Bomb. Does it add coloration. Well, yes. Since I've owned my Ghia, I always have played with the volume max'd. And, no one's ever told me I was too loud including my wife when I record at home. That's because I've recorded it through a mic'd IsoCab located in my basement. I've played live using my AirBrake. I've played live using my UA Ox directly into the PA, and lately using the UA Ox attenuator into a live speaker cab. They all add their own flavor. However, I've never played the Ghia max'd directly into a live speaker. It would be way to loud for me. So, i suppose, what I'm trying to say is that if it sounds good to you and/or you're getting the sound you want, you're good. One last note is if JWMANZ is still playing with the amp in the back closet, could he just run the direct out to the PA assuming they'd be giving him a good monitor mix where his guitar would sound good. The Two Notes is not cheap, but I'm thinking it sounds really good.

It absolutely allows me to dial up the tone I like while scaling back the volume(or, I suppose getting it even louder than stock should I ever play a stage like that again...). This weekend I am going to try it with the Mini Z and see how well that works vs the on board attenuator. All I have is time on my hands, as you can probably tell...
