Is the Maz 18 loud enough to play small to medium sized clubs without miking it and keep a pretty clean tone?

hmmm... that all depends man. for me, every sound man i've ever had is always complaining about the guitar amp being too loud and screwing up the stage mix. but if you don't run a guitar in the monitors you are obviously using your amp as your monitor so i don't know. it's always been loud enough for me, but i'm not looking for a completely clean tone you know? i'd much rather have that sparkly sort of Vox sound going on, with a little hair on the notes, and being able to play clean by softening my pick attack and using the volume on the guitar.
one thing i can say, if you come from the Fender camp, it will blow a DRRI out of the room volume wise. same for the HRDlx or the Blues Jr. or any of that other new fender stuff. but then again, a Twin will get pretty loud. personally, i think the Maz Jr. is the perfect small club amp.
hope some of that helps, charlie
