I'm on the hunt for another amp, and I've got a list of Z amps I'm gonna try when I make my way up to Humbucker Music later this month. Anyway, after watching some videos, the Maz 8 has made its way onto this list. I've owned several Z amps before, so I know that just because this amp is rated at 8 watts, it's still loud. For those of you that gig with an 8 (without a mic), how's the headroom? I would assume that the amp gets driven pretty hard at stage volume, but to what extent?

My experience with my 8 is it does much better in a closed environment that outdoors. On two outdoor gigs I intended to use my but brought my Z28 head just in case. Both times I ended up plugging the 28 into the 8's speaker. Indoors has always no issue at low to moderate levels, but that is using pentode mode. Triode drops the amp down to around 3 watts I believe - which would work perfect for a coffee house type setting. I do not use the tone bypass, but it does add more volume as well as some nice grind!

It stands up fine to a big band I play in, 4 trumpets, 4 saxes, 3 trombones, keys, bass, drums, vocalists & me. I agree about an open air gig if you don't have a shell behind the band, it might bust a good sweat trying to keep up with that. That's for the Therapy, Maz 18NR, or Z-Lux.

Well, it's the amp I've played the most. At Church, I use pedals and play the master hard right and volume to taste. For rock and blues in a small club, I play volume hard right and master to taste. I recommend the 2016 model if you get a new one.

Love mine!! I have the Studio Combo and since January, I haven't found a single situation where it didn't shine. 5-piece Country band, Big Band, Studio, 3 piece, it just works...amazingly well. I don't really run it squeaky clean; Vol cranked/Master to taste with a Telecaster feeding it twangy chunks of raw meat!!!

A MAZ 8 is going to be my next amp purchase. I've tried out the older version and I wouldn't have a problem using it at any indoor gig I would play. I would advise using it with a very efficient speaker. I'm going to order mine with the stock Z12 (98.5dB) and if that isn't loud enough or I just don't care for the way it sounds I will swap it with a spare Celestion Gold (100 dB) I have. The Gold is my favorite speaker. The older MAZ 8 I played had a G12H30 (100 dB) in it. I liked the amp with that speaker too.

I second the recommendation for the most efficient speaker if you are going to use the Maz 8 live. I have a Blue in mine. It lives in the studio. If I was taking it out I'd swap with a G12H30 that I have here.

Sounds good. I don't gig, but I really want to start. I've got several great amps, but I really need my own sound. I can get just about any tone I want out of my current lineup, but I really want an amp that has a unique voice that's all mine. Not one that sounds like someone else.

I've owned 2 Maz 38's, a Remedy, a M12, a KT45, and now have a Maz 8 (and my Z Lux will finally be here Friday!!!).
All of these amps were purchased in my quest for MY tone. If I could afford it, I'd keep every one. They all do their own thing so well it's just sick.
I recently sold my Remedy and am now selling my KT45. I'm going with a bit lower-powered amps, due to the types of gigs I play now (churches and smaller gigs).
The Maz 38 was my first experience with Dr Z, and over the years I've sold one Z to try another Z. But somehow, I could never get that Maz sound out of my head. It's just so versatile, and fits well with so many styles of music. So now I've gone to the Maz 8, and it delivers all of that Maz sound I loved - at very practical volumes. The Maz 8 is here to stay. I'm just blown away by all the textures it can deliver.
Of all the Z's I've personally owned, the Maz and the Remedy have been my favorites. I haven't been able to get a rock sound that rivals the Remedy. My LP with P90's through a Remedy is pure rock n roll heaven. I hope that one day I'll be able to afford another one. One of the very best Z has created.
I cannot report on the Z Lux yet. I have a feeling I'm going to like it as well.
The Maz 8 is surely worth trying. Like you said, you just need to decide what YOUR sound will be.

The Z-Lux seems cool as well, but I've got a Tone King Imperial that seems to cover the blackface cleans, with a lead channel that takes me from tweed to Marshall territory.
