What's the proper way to remove a rectifier tube from an octal socket with the bear claw type retainer ? Do you just bend the metal loops out/down a little, then squeeze them back before inserting the new tube, so they grab the new tube base ? I don't want to bend them if it's not necessary.
Also, I've read that it's not a good idea to pull a plastic base tube out by grabbing the glass. Especially a NOS tube, as this can separate the glass from the base. Instead, grasp the base and work the tube out in a circular motion.
To do this, it seems like you would need to create a bit of a gap between the base and the retainer. Is there a trick to doing a rectifier R&R without bending with the retainer clip ?
Thanks in advance.

The "jaws" of the retainer are spring steel , so just using your index and middle fingers depress the clamps to get just enough clearance to wiggle the tube out. Its a good idea to grasp the tube at the base. Just give it a good tug while wiggling , it'll come right out. And when installing the new one you need only apply slight pressure on the retainer to let the base slip in. It will spring back just fine.
