I've been thinking a lot lately about getting a bass just to tinker with and maybe to turn my son onto. Have even been considering short-scales. Just looking for recommendations on something entry-level to mid-level as I don't intend to play it out. Kinda leaning toward the Squire Jaguar SS. Lots of good reviews on that one, and there's a local one for sale for a good price.

The Fender Mustang may be up your alley, although there is a Squire model of the Mustang for less money. I have to play bass in church, so, not wanting to spend much money, I bought one of the Gretsch short scale basses (Jet 2?) with 2 pickups from Sweetwater for $300, and it works fine and plays pretty well.

Just like 6 string choices today, there are many cool looking, playing and sounding basses for great prices. Go play a few and grab one that speaks to you.
Every guitarist needs a bass. Bass is cool~

I picked up a Squire Jazz for my youngest son at Christmas. Great Bass, plays great right out of the box. Just been playing it, no mods yet . . . .
