Doctorice, glad you brought up clean boost. Noob question: will a good OD pedal also work as a clean boost if you minimize the gain and turn up the volume ? I've tried this with my OD pedal, and it still has a small (and bad) effect on the amp.
Marcus, your "3 paths" post is really helpful. I kinda had an idea that there are different ways to get an over driven tone, but you post really condensed it into useful information. Much appreciated.
And the Pedal Show video.... HA! That one made me laugh. At the 6:30 point where they run the Big Muff into the the Twin Reverb... That's pretty much what I get when I turn the (pedal) treble up, the bass down, and crank the gain knob up to about 3 or 4. Fingernails on a blackboard !
Thanks guys... very enlightening.

ianrossiter Why, thank you... and no, it's not just you. I wouldn't be writing half novels like these on here if I hadn't been in a similarly frustrated spot at some time in my life. It all comes down to how you use the amp. Wedding or church band with need for loads of different tones? Go 1. Indie rock band with mostly one tone and some lead parts that need to stick out? Go 2. Obsessive tone-nerd who loves the amp sound but wants to play with it and not leave any potential left unused? Go 3. Doctorice, glad you brought up clean boost. Noob question: will a good OD pedal also work as a clean boost if you minimize the gain and turn up the volume ? I've tried this with my OD pedal, and it still has a small (and bad) effect on the amp. Yes. I – and most other Klon users – use my Klone with the gain off. I like the EQ curve and compression characteristics it offers as a clean-ish boost.

That's how I ran my Klon. Few other pedal types will work like that though unless you like their particular EQ curve.

EP Booster, AC Booster, King of Tone, Prince of Tone, any other Klon-Clone (EHX Soul Food, Tumnus, the Rockett things...). There's a few that should work well into a MAZ

I get down on the EP booster and a Rangemaster style boost. I didn't set out to have all one knob drives, but that's where I am.

Hi Doc. Thanks for weighing in. And thanks to you and your staff for putting out the effort and expense to provide this forum. For a new guy like me to be able to get solid information from the good people on this board, and not have to stumble around in the dark... it adds so much to the value of having one of your amps. Greatly appreciated ! Cheers DC

I liken a great Telecaster into a MAZ (with a comp, but that's just me) to a great Saxophone,Violin,D-18,or National Tricone; A near perfect sound onto itself. The fundamental sound you get doesn't really require anything else. It's a perfect recipe, as is. It's the perfect Roots music sound. You can do anything with it your hands and mind throw at it. It's a purity of sound,a purity of voice. Again, like a D-18. I set up my gear, switch it on, and without touching the amp again until I switch it off, there's nowhere it can't go. Nothing I can't do with it. I'm altering my pick attack, switching pickups, but that's it. Sure, there's an OD on the floor if I want that. The Delay and Vibrato are there for specific sounds that I can't get otherwise, but that's it. For me, there's nothing else required. The fundamental, tone is perfect. I don't need anything else. When the Klone craze hit, I tried one. Just to see what all the fuss was about. Didn't dig it. It was an unnessary color/flavour. Gimmie my Telecaster and good Compressor and one of my MAZ's and I'm good to go.

damn you Ianrossiter.... you just doubled the GAS pain. I'm feeling the gravitational pull of the Tele bad these days. So many ways to go.... a regular good old used Fender at a good price... one that needs a little work I can do myself. Or something new and beautiful I'll want to hang on to. Tops on the wish list at the moment is a G&L ASAT classic S Alnico With a rosewood fretboard. Got any advice for a first time Tele buyer ?

First off...as far as the damning goes, get behind my ex-wives!! Lol The thing about the Telecaster is the nakedness of it, the wiry sting. There's nowhere to hide. No cushion of thick mids. You have to PLAY the Tele, If you're having a bad night,EVERYBODY's gonna know it. But that's the point... The Tele is probably the truest electric guitar there is. Nothing comes out that you don't put in. Great!! The components the make up a Telecaster aren't many, so it's important to have the best ones. Like a good meal; a few great ingredients is really all you need. The AM Std series are good, solid workhorses,as are the Roadworns. G&L makes great ones too. It really depends on what you want; vintage, modern, somewhere in the middle? There's scads of small builders as well who are doing amazing things; Hann,Crooke,Whitfield, ect. I love my Femder Custom Shop 50's Thinline.

OK I take back the damning thing... I don't want to get anywhere near a line of angry ex-wives !
A few posts back I was asking about the Rockett Blue Note. At the beginning of the Video I posted of Mike Hermans demoing the BN ... THAT sound.. that's what I would love to have. That Tele sounds perfect to me. Got any idea what make/pickups would yield that beautiful tone ?

Ah,ok. Now I'm up to speed!! The guitar looks like a Fender Americian Deluxe with an aftermarket 3 saddle bridge. The Stock pickups are most likely a version of the Fender Noisless, but if the guy is savvy enough to do the AMSTD/ vintage style, aftermarket bridge, it stands to reason that he may have customized further by going with a different set of pickups. Personally, I have a Fender Broadcaster style in the bridge and a Twisted Tele in the neck and I've never been happier. This comming from a diehard Joe Barden user!! You'd have no problem getting close to that tone with those pickups.

Neck: Analogman Big-T Bridge: Lollar Special Source: (also check 1:40 to hear tele+amp straight without the pedal... it sounds fairly flat but works very well as a pedal platform set like this) Edit: The man knows his teles... enter "tele" into the search on his channel for some very cool sounding clips: www.youtube.com/user/popintothechemist/search?query=tele

That's it ! Nice find Marcus ! I found this video of Mr. Hermans demoing an Xotic XT-1 that looks pretty similar, but it has a different bridge. Here's a pretty funny video of Brad Paisley demoing a Crook tele. I wonder if he's playing through a DB-4. Man ! this tele sounds HUGE.
