What BritInvasion said. Check that fuse, it must be a slo-blo. Also, make sure the tension spring in the fuse holder is good and tight. Unplug your amp before checking it.

I feel bad for you, redzrock...that is bad tube luck. All too common these days. If tubes aren't busy taking out fuses they are rattling and humming, and believe me, I've had a lot of tube related issues lately. But for all their hassles, when you get tube troubles sorted out there is NOTHING like a Z amp to rock my musical world. Tubes can really be a pain in the a$$ but I love the dang things. When they work, they are wonderful.

I remember when I picked up my Maz 8 from the shop, it was part of the first batch of 25, Don was in the QA room pulling his hair out trying to find a preamp tube that wasn't microphonic or would rattle. In the 10 minutes I was there he went through several tubes before one would finally pass the mallet test.
Tubes . . . . what a love/hate relationship they are . . . they sure sound great when all is good though!

Yep, tubes can certainly be frustrating. But there's nothing that sounds like a Z! The worst part of this ordeal was the timing. Trying to revive a band that hasn't played together in over 3 years for a gig in 2 two weeks. (I know, bad idea). Murphy's law I guess.

Fingers crossed Red Z , hope you have a good one in there now. Sorry for the stress. I Hope the MAZ 8 gives you years of inspiration.

I know forum members are tired of me saying this but I only run NOS rectifiers in my amps when reliability is essential. It's the first thing I change when I get one home from the store. Amp builders would love to be able to use them but the supply is just not consistent enough for that. But an individual owner should have one or two of these. They would probably be the last rectifiers they will ever need.
Some of the NOS rectifiers I see listed for sale are at stupid prices. It almost seems to me that there is a collectors market for rare tubes. We are not collectors. We are going to put these in tube amps and subject them to bumps and vibration. There are still reasonably priced rectifiers out there; at least for the time being. I've had good luck over the years dealing with KCA NOS Tubes.

My new rectifier seems to be holding up well so far. This amp rocks! Got my first gig with it this weekend. A smallish outdoor church festival. Gonna rock some Third Day-type stuff!
Can't wait!

All of this talk about a rectifier going out made me grab a back up. Just checked my tracking from perryr and the order is in town. It's a good thing because right on que the stock rectifier is sputtering. My back up tube tonight is a Therapy!

That's a Sovtek 5AR4, right? Man, they really have a run of lousy rectifier tubes right now. I've never had anything but Sovtek rectifiers fail on me. Except a new Tung Sol, but I believe that Sovtek owns the Tung Sol trademark now, so it's another Sovtek in sheep's clothing.

I am using a JJ rectifier now, curious at their longevity.

PT, my stock rectifier was chinese also. I only had it in there for a couple days before swapping it for the NOS RCA 5AR4. Sorry to hear you're having problems with the NOS already. Hmmmm... bad omen. Maybe "stems & seeds" applies to rectifiers too.

Yes $100 worth of disappointment. It sputtered and recovered but I am sure it is going to start failing. Just got a Mullard GZ34 (Branded Phillips)
Who needs gambling, I'm into tubes.
Tube amps are not for sissies!

Had my first gig with my Maz 8 on Saturday. It was a very simple, but very cool rural gig. I was running it through my 1x12 with a Creamback. The new rectifier held up just fine. The amp sounded incredibly good! For years, I've stayed away from lower wattage amps out of fear of being underpowered. My Maz had no problem keeping up with the semi-loud band. The tones were rich and complex. It sounded so much bigger than I would have thought.
I am totally happy with this one. It's a keeper!
Thanks for another winner Doc
