Is anyone having rattle problems with the late issue JJ6V6 tubes? Just the other day I had another one, the third in a year, that reared up in my Z-Lux combo. Man, I HATE tube rattles...it wasn't so obvious, this one only showed up when I played a G note. Very strange. Even so, the JJ's sound great in my Z-Lux. When they don't rattle.

I know this is an old thread but I'm surprised no one commented on it. The tube rattle of the JJ 6V6 tubes in my Z-Lux just drives me crazy, I've tried some other brands of tubes but they don't sound as good as the JJ's. I've tried putting dampers on the tubes but it really doesn't help much. All my other Z's have been heads just for this very reason so I've resigned myself to the fact I'll probably need to get external cabinet to "fix" this problem. I've even bought a matched Octet of tubes to see if I can come up with 4 that don't rattle...NOPE!

In a Z-Lux, aren't you limited by voltage to JJs for modern 6v6s? It would be worth talking to the Eurotubes guy in Oregon or one of the other boutique suppliers. This sounds like a resonant frequency issue that could be tube or cabinet related (or both.) it can't really be easily isolated in a combo.

Or changing to the 5881's that Doc has recommended.

I finally found a quad of JJ6V6's that work well. I did run the 5881's for a few months but I like the tone of the 6V6 tubes better. So now I'm just crossing my fingers hoping that they last a good while. So far so good...But when I wrote this post I had a string of bad JJ tubes. Hope they've gotten their act together. Are these recent buys that you fellas are having rattles with?

I buy about 100 JJ 6v6's a month, and my rejection rate is now about 10%, a vast improvement from just two years ago. Fingers crossed this improvement continues.

Yeah I tried the 5881's but they don't sound as good as the JJ 6V6's
If Doc says they've been better recently I might need to try another set, of course I could have paid for a external cab with the money I've spend on rattling tubes.....
I think the last set of tubes I bought was about 6 months ago.

I don't know about the rest of you all, but when I get a bad tube I don't always send it back. I think that is going to change, because if I don't complain about bad tubes, they'll just keep crankin' them out. Maybe if they have to eat enough returns it'll make a difference.

Are you guys buying your JJs from CE Distribution/Amplified Parts/Antique Electronics (all the same company, all in the Tempe AZ area...)?
