Finally got to play the new Maz Jr 2x10 at rehearsal last night and experienced quite a bit of hiss at all volume levels. At home I heard a lot of hiss but thought that the quiet home environment might be the cause.
I was using a Les Paul Standard but the same thing happens with a tele except worse because of single coils. If I take my hands off the guitar it is much worse.
I really enjoy the tone of the amp, but the hiss is distracting. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this? Do you have any suggestions besides "its all part of the tube amp mojo"?
Amp is two weeks old, fresh from Dr. Z's shop to my van to my house. Jeff

Don't know what to tell you lynch. I played the amp sounded right to me. Hiss is generally white noise , so gain is up ( Volume ) or treble and CUT are letting a lot of high frequency threw. Try turning them down, you have Svet's in V1 and V2 those are nice and warm generally.

I was not intending to complain, sorry if it came off that way. Yes, the noise is controlled by lowering the gain, treble and/or cut. The purpose of my inquiry was to find out if it is normal to experience the hiss with those controls fairly high.
I guess the answer is yes, it is normal. That's what I wanted to know. Thanks for the direct answer Z. I appreciate it. Jeff

The first Maz Jr I played was at Gravity Strings in St. Louis in 2003 and it was hissy to my way of hearing - I ab'd it w/a Budda Verbmaster at the time using a G&L guitar that has those z-shaped pick-ups - the Verbmaster was noticeably quieter. A year later, I played another Maz Jr at Emerald City Guitars in Seattle, and it too was kind of hissy. Nonetheless, I managed to bottom-fish a Maz Jr off of E-bay a little over a year ago, and it is much quieter than the ones I test drove at the stores. The only diff between them is that the ones at the stores had reverb and the one I got off of E-bay was non-reverb. I'm not saying that causes or should cause a difference - just reciting my observations and experience. I'm very happy with the one I got - a great pro sounding amp.

The only hiss I've experienced with my Maz Jr. is from a reverb unit and solved that by 1) putting it through the effects loop and 2) putting it on a different power supply than my other effects.

I finally got to play the Maz Jr (2x10) in a band environment at church yesterday. It might as well have been absolutely silent. In the large room with the amp several feet behind me and all the other activity, I did not hear it at all . . . except for that glorious Z tone. The amp is very revealing concerning my quality of playing (or lack thereof). Every little nuance is right there for all to hear . . . good of bad. I feel a little ridiculous starting this thread now that I have experienced the amp in the way it was intended to be used. I think new owners are always a little critical of their new toys until they get used to them. I am definitely a satisfied owner now. Thanks for all the input. Jeff

Oh yes... in a real band situation, it's sometimes hard enough to hear your amp when you ARE playing, let alone when you are NOT. Cheers, Shawn

Yeah at home in a small room it is like under a microscope. On a stage it can open up and sing like it's made to do. DR.Z
