I know the 6545 has a SRZ-65 channel, but I was curious... Looking at the tube compliment, I can't tell if the 6545 removes a 12AX7 from the 65 side or if the two channels share a PI... I had a buddy who had a 6545 and he said the 65 said was too dark and didn't have a whole lot of gain at all. Not sure if he had tube issues or what because the demos I hear of the SRZ-65 seem to indicate plenty of gain on tap. Can anyone to speak to whether the 6545 had a "neutered" version of the SRZ, or do you think my buddy just had some high headroom power or preamp tubes?

While the 6545 isn't quite as "gainy" as a regular SRZ 65 it is by no means "neutered"!

Thanks for the input. Just wasn't sure what effect the preamp setup would have on the 65 side of the 6545.

To get a feel for the sound check out Steve's demos on the 6545 - Great examples of what it can do! www.strayca.com/gear/6545.htmThanks and kudos to Steve for all the stuff he has done for the Forum, including his sound clips!

So if I have questions in the future, should I even take up forum server space with a post or just message you directly Mike?

I've been around for a while and tend to remember where I saw something earlier. Plus, I have most Z amps so I can speak from experience on a lot of them. But keep posting - I like to occasionally let someone else answer! BTW - did you like the 6545 tones?

Judging by your posts on various amps it sounds like you need to visit the MuZum soon. I have all the amps you've been looking at!

Haven't had a chance to watch it. I will once I get home...
As far as the MuZum goes, I hate Michigan. Only go when absolutely necessary, and that isn't often. Although I may be headed to Grand Rapids sometime in the future.

The 6545 is a fun amp. Yes, slight compromises relative to separate KT-45 and SRZ-65, but a nice way to have a couple classic Zs in one chassis.(That's why I grabbed one.)
Btw, I agree with Mike that the 65 side is not neutered. Unlike many of the current Zs, the 6545 needs to be re-biased. Worn tubes and drift from spec bias could certainly impair the tone.
