So I've used my Maz Jr to work with the last two nights. Friday night, I noticed that it sounded "weak" and ratty. However, the club I was in isn't the best sounding room, and I just thought it was the environment (subpar PA and pretty loud band), although I did struggle with the lack of punch and clarity.
Then last night, I did a private party with a fairly low volume blues band, and to even hear myself I had to crank the amp, and it just sounded horrible.
Very "weak" as I said, and distorted in a bad way. Really struggled all night with trying to get a good sound out of it, which has NEVER happened with that amp.
So I've checked all my connections, and the power tubes are only a couple of months old. They were a new set of GT #6, just like stock. They aren't glowing red or blue, but nice and orange and "normal" looking.
So in my very limited "tech" expereince, I've narrowed it down to a couple of things......
The rectifier tube is original, and appears normal. Is it possible for it to cause this problem? My understanding is that either a rectifier works or it doesn't, not that it goes "bad" gradually (or noticeably.)
My other thought is that the amp is doing the EXACT same thing that a Deluxe Reverb reissue I used to have did. It would get the same type of unpleasing tone several times over the course that I owned it. And when it went to the shop, it was a burnt screen resistor. Happened 4 or 5 times, and then I finally unloaded the amp the last time I had to pay the tech to get it fixed.
I'm trying to find simple solutions and trials before I give up and bug the doctor with it, as I know how busy he is.
Myles, in your experience, have you had GTEL84S' give you any problems as new as they are? And if they are bad, wouldn't they "look" bad when on....like glowing red or blue on the plates or something?
Any suggestions would be great....
Thanks,
JC
