Hi all. I got a really good deal on a used Remedy that is only a couple of months old, so it has a MV. I have now played about 4 hours on it and this is my problem. It seems like the 2 blended volumes controls are not very linear. As you turn them they stay on the edge of break up then a little past 2 o'clock "bang" really heavy OD. Don't get me wrong, I really really love the heavy OD sound, but would like something more than almost clean then balls to the wall. I had a Plexi ,but that was 30 years ago and cannot remember if it behaved this way. I tried rolling the volume back on my guitar when on heavy OD setting. but still not quite what I looking for either. I guess I could use an OD pedal, but was hoping to use the amps natural sound if I could. Let me know if any of you guys or gals have any suggestions. Thanks

Do you use the guitar volume much? Doc's amps are very sensitive to GV - they tend to clean up very well with it.

Have you opened the MV all the way? Does it have tone by bass, if that is engaged it will break up alot.
Do you know if but has factory pre amp tubes?

Thanks I too had a Remedy, and played it for a coupla years. Loved the Marshall flavor of the Remedy, but was looking for something just a little different. The Z-Lux came along with the Remedy's power section but a more manageable front-end pre-amp. Might check the vids and see if the Lux might be calling you too.....

If you have JJ preamp tubes try changing them out I am not fond of them try anything but those. ...

Hi all I agree with you Albert. I am not a fan of JJ's. I would like to change out the JJ power tubes also, but from what I have read here they are the only 6v6's that can hold up in amp. I sent an e-mail to Dr Z and asked what power tubes other than JJ's that would be safe to use. I haven't heard back yet. Just checked the tubes. The preamp tubes, V1 & V2, are JJ's. The PI is a Tung-sol. I will try changing the V1 & V2 with some Tung-sols and EH's that I have. I also have one NOS RCA 12ax7 I can try in V1. I have worked with the guitar volume and that helps some. Thanks all for the great suggestions.

Try Tung-Sol reissue 5881. Matched quad medium grade. Will increase clean headroom, and are a drop in replacement.

I really liked the remedy with an rca in v1. Best by far of the few I tried.

Sounds like the Dr has you dialed in. But if you have time dig down for Miles' tube recommendations. I tried it when I had mine and it was great!

It's an amp beloved by many--I really tried to bond with mine, too, but couldn't, ultimately. I think in general I may lean a bit more toward the Fender-y sound tweaked with pedals than the Marshall-y or Vox-y thing.

Thanks Doc for the info about the power tubes. I tried Mike's suggestion to open up the MV. I first switched the amp from 40 watts to 20 watts seeing how I was trying this at home. Found some nice tones with the MV at about 4:00 and the 2 blended knobs between 11:00 and 2:00. I also worked the volume knob on my Les Paul Standard. I think I finally starting to understand how to work the Remedy. I going to do little preamp tube rolling this weekend. Depending on how that works out, I might order a set of the Tung-sol 5881's. I want to thank everyone that responded with their thoughts and suggestions. One of the great things about owning Dr Z amps besides the incrediable tones is all the helpful people at this site. This is my third Dr Z amp couldn't be happier with all of them. Thanks all again.

Try Tung-Sol reissue 5881. Matched quad medium grade. Will increase clean headroom, and are a drop in replacement. Dang! If I'd known this before, I'd still have my Remedy! Best (to me) clean sound I'd ever heard, just broke up too early. I tried swapping out preamp tubes, but could never get it quite where I wanted... Oh well, I'll have to console myself with my M12! (Or buy another Remedy)

David62,
I have to admit that when I played my Remedy for the first time in my studio, I thought it was a really good amp and a keeper. It wasn't until my first live show with it that I really loved it. After about 6 shows, I figured out how to dial it in and now I just love it. IMHO, this thing was made for the stage, not the house.

Try Tung-Sol reissue 5881. Matched quad medium grade. Will increase clean headroom, and are a drop in replacement. WOW! I just did this and I'm really, really happy with the result. The sound is firmer, stouter, crisper and the extra headroom is very welcome to me. I can still easily tame the volume with the PPIMV. There is still tons of overdrive available. High on 2:00 and Normal on 10:00 is getting me a very good blues-rock distorted sound with humbuckers. Obviously, this may not be for everyone, e.g. metal players, but they're probably not using the Remedy anyway. Thanks to the good Doctor. I would never have dared try this as a drop-in without his advice.

I know this has been covered before, but I recently purchased a Z 1x12 cab from a member here with a single G12H30. Has anyone here used this with a Remedy and has anyone blown one? If I ever have the opportunity to take it out to a large venue I have a cab with two 1968 G12H30s as well as other options.

so these tubes are like 6l6's? Does this mean the amp is louder too? Not that it needs to be louder! Just thinking of sweet spots. Does it get closer to a fender sound when set with master maxed and volume to taste? WOW! I just did this and I'm really, really happy with the result. They are closer to 6L6's in power than the 6V6's are. Most 6V6's 12W maximum, 6L6's about 30W, and 5881's about 23W.
The Remedy is a little bit louder with the 5881's. Assuming you got all the power difference you could, you could expect about 3db difference, which isn't much. But even getting that extra power would depend on the plate voltage and other things; I don't know if the Remedy circuit is set up to get on output doubling going from 6V6's to 5881's.
I wouldn't say it sounds more like a Fender. It still sounds like the Remedy, just more headroom and less squishy at the onset of distortion. If I'm not imagining things, the onset of distortion is more gradual, so it's easier to get a "just about to overdrive" bluesy sound.
I've got nothing against 6V6's. I love my Tweed Deluxe clone. But it sounds nothing at all like the Remedy. This change just suits my tastes perfectly.

Hi all! New forum member here! I just got my remedy a couple weeks ago, ordered it along side the Backline 2x12 (pre-order). I too cannot seem to bond with it very well. Im playing it through a Avatar 4x12 (not sure about what speakers) and when the breakup happens, it almost sounds farty. Not a thick, warm breakup, more of a harsh, saturated one. Is this because of the cab im using, or an issue with tubes?

Is this because of the cab im using, or an issue with tubes? I would want to understand the speakers before you change anything in the amp. They make a huge difference. Also, spend some time experimenting with the High and Low input levels. This amp can be a little finicky to dial in and how you set those two up can really effect what you hear. I would suggest starting with low off. Roll up the High until you start getting the gain you want. Adjust the tone controls. Then you can bring the Low volume up to fill in the sound. You should really think about them as independent controls. You can use one or the other or you can blend them to create different colors of your tone. My 2 cents, Todd

Unknown speakers in a 4x12? That could be most of the issue right there. The Remedy loves greenback type speakers (and all the clones out there...every speaker maker has a greenback clone.) They're the best match of any speaker I know. If you're looking for a more metal sound, Vintage 30 speakers will do the trick. These are the only two speakers I'd ever need to use with the Remedy.
As Todd said above: play with the inputs. There is an unusual relationship between the two inputs, and the treble. Keep tweeking.
If you're looking for a old school vintage Marshall tone with humbuckers, here's what I do:
High channel: 2-3:00 Bass channel: OFF
Bass: 9:00 Mid: noon-3:00 Treble: maybe around 10:00 (somewhere below noon)
You can't have the treble up past 10-noon because you're not using the bass channel/volume at all. So turning the treble up gets bright real fast.
And then all of this has to be put into a closed back cabinet with either 2 or 4 greenbacks.
That is the sound of ROCK AND ROLL!
If you want to use single coils...use the same setup as above, but close your eyes, play something and turn the bass channel/volume up until you get the tone you want.

Chances are if anyone here has tried them they can save you some time. That said, most guys playing the Remedy just can't get enough of the Greenbacks or Creambacks. Most popular speakers with this amp.

Do I put the 5881's in all power tube spots?

If I remember, the Remedy is a self biasing amp, so no need to change anything. and yes...if you're going to use 5881 tubes, you must put them in all 4 power amp sockets. No mixing and matching with 6V6 tubes.
Not enough headroom with a stock Remedy @ 40 watts? That's pretty loud!

It has to do with the fact that I use a Tube Driver as my main drive tone and its a VERY loud pedal, and so since my drive is so loud, I use a Klone to boost my cleans, but now my delays are distorted. The amp is set very clean, 40 watts setting, master vol at about 1:00, high and normal volumes both set the same a little above the lowest setting that still gives sound. I like having a clean base tone since I play a lot of clean, spacey chording, and I rely on the TD to give me that tube overdrive.

John E, I read your post and was playing with a delay and distortion on my Remedy and I too get a muddy signal, I have to think and inquire about the technical issue going on. I just bought a HOF Reverb and I was hoping I could get a tone print that had a light echo or delay. so I didn't have to run all the modulation through the front end.
