It's amazing how dynamic the settings are on this amp - to be honest, I was having a hard time with it, and was close to trading it.... until I read some posts on this thread about dialing in the sound "with your ears, not your eyes".....
My main amps have been Marshall JCM 800 (hence played a SRZ 65 for awhile), ENGL's, Vox AC30 and also have played a Carmen Ghia combo for years. Took me awhile to get used to the Carmen Ghia, but have found the sweet spot..... and my studio partner says it's the best sounding amp he's ever heard.
So when I got the Therpay, seeing as it's got the Bass Mid and Treble I tried dialing in the sounds how I would with my Engl and Marshalls..... cranked the bass, mids about 2pm and the treble about 1.30pm
I had no idea that when the controls are at noon (if this is correct), that they're maxed out..... I couldnt get the sound I wanted, but didn't think about cutting any of the frequencies below noon because I never did this with my other amps.... I just assumed this wasn't the sound I wanted and thought about flipping it
SO.... after reading these threads, i had a go at dialing in the sound with all controls at zero and literally using my ears only - not even knowing where they were going to end up
Amazing.... this amp has opened up into a completely different beast. I didn't want to stop playing...... it's like the amp is an instrument in itself.... the sustain on held notes blooms and swells and the amp responds to your fingers with clarity and an expressive natural compression
So, I left the master cranked (apparently this takes it out of the circuit), and found my bass at 9.15, mids at 11.45 and treble at 3..... with the non-master volume about 11.30
The bottom end is BIG and punchy..... crazy that the bass control is where it is , even with the bass rolled off completely the amp sounds great but now it's just right..... having it maxed out before squashed the sound and was complete overkill
Cranking the non master turned it into some kind of cross between and AC30 and a JCM 800..... but I'll be using my Z drive to get the gain I want and it's breaking up just right at just before noon
I'm pretty excited about finding these sounds, and I do understand the confusion some people have written about on this thread when they first try to dial the amp in.... I will be holding onto this baby for a long time
Have attached a solo from a recent session, I think I've used a fulltone OCD for the drive into the therapy... check out the sustain on the last note NOTE - I still had the bass cranked when I recorded this, the amp sounds even bigger and punchier with more bottom end now that I've dialed it back to 9 ish.... crazy.... but so cool
