Hi there
I bought a MAZ38 4 months ago and I've been really happy about the amp. I run the amp through a Dr.Z 2x10 cab and usually run the amp clean and the rest is done with pedals.
However, I've noticed the amp is almost becomming too heavy with the mids and low end. I now play with bass and mid set to 9 o'clock and it's still rather heavy with mid and lower frequencies. If I use pedals that push the mids, I get ridiculous amount of mids. I love e mids, but it feels like its getting worse?
Is there a problem with the amp or the tubes?
Any suggestions?

Most likely an EL84 issue. Re-tube the power tubes, and I'll bet your amp "awakens!" '84's tend to be erratic these days, and can slowly go bad without you realizing it. I just re-tubed 2 of my EL84 Z amps just because the tubes were getting old. Holy cow was I surprised with how much better they sounded! Good luck, and welcome to the forum! Keep us posted on your attempt to fix this problem....

Thanks. I've been lurking around for while, but never posted anything Yea, I've been thinking about retubing the power tubes and see if that might help. Any spesific tubes I should go for? I'll keep the thread updated.

I don't have a 38...but I hardly ever use my bass and mid controls over 9...retube is always a great rec.

Once you retube set your amp based on your ears not your eyes - makes a big difference!

I just got my shipping notification from thetubestore.com. 7189 power tubes is on its way! Looking forward to check out the difference between the 7189 and the stock JJ's.

I have 7189's in both my Maz 38 NR and my Matchless and they are excellent. Sound great and are very durable. I tend to run the bass at noon or above with no issues, but I use a big box open back 212, which can handle a ton of bass and still sounds good.
I have had the set in the Matchless for about 3 years, they are the only EL84's I have ever used that don't rattle like hell in that amp. Very rugged construction.

I installed the new 7189's in my Z, and the amp sounds so much better now! Not sure if this is because of worn-out tubes or whether the new 7189's simply sounds better than the stock JJ's. One thing is for sure; the amp sounds alot better now!
Thanks for recommending the 7189's!

I've never felt my 38 had too much bass, maybe because i mainly use the bridge pickup in my guitars? I always have the bass nearly dimed.

Sounds alot tighter in the bottom end now.

Probably was primarily just old/bad tubes.
