I joined these forums a few months back and started a thread in the Therapy section trying to decide if I wanted an EZG 50 or a Therapy. ztalk.proboards.com/thread/70425/give-sparkle-which-6l6-amp
Well I landed on the Therapy and am extremely happy with it, but in the back of my mind I always knew I would have to try the EZG. I love trying out these amps so much that in a few short months I have also had a Z28, and then traded it for a Maz 18 reverb. Then sold that for the EZG. The Z28 had some great rock tones, but not as usable for me. The Maz 18 was actually fantastic, but I have gas problems. I could see myself getting another one in the future. Probably the NR version though.
I got the EZG yesterday and this thing is large in every way. I first just plugged my G&L asat bluesboy 90 straight in and played through a 1x12 with a swamp thang to see what it had. Very nice, yes the bass is crazy and I ended up with it just barely cracked. I was actually surprised how overdriven it gets when you really crank it, but LOUD. With the pre and post about 1 oclock there is a real sweet spot, still very loud. It has such clarity and a snappyness (?), yet great harmonics that ring out.
Then I plugged into the pedal board and a/b with the Therapy through the same cab using my Radail headbone head switcher. I dimed the mv on the therapy and had the vol about 9:30 and eq'd to get as close to the EZG as possible. Then matched the EZG volume to the Therapy. At this level they were actually closer than I thought. Still different though, the Therapy has a rounder, warmer, almost squishier sort of clean sound, compared to the clarity and punch of the EZG. The Therapy is starting to break up at this volume, and I mainly like to use Klon like pedals for my od, which do not work as well with the EZG at this volume.
So although the Therapy won't be going anywhere and I can't see anything replacing it as my main band jam amp, I think the EZG will keep a place with me. I already ordered a Wampler Euphoria to try another flavor of od, and have a Bad Cat Unleash attenuator coming. Really curious to see how it sounds pushed harder and attenuated down to band practice levels. These 2 amps would probably make by ultimate a/b clean, overdrive setup right now, but that gets to be alot of hassle to set up all the time.
Anyway just thought I would share my experience so far with some of the Z amps. Back to playing.
