Hi everybody! The z lux is calling my name! I'm planning on a head and 1x12, but I'm not sure if I should go with a creamback or z12. Anyone play a lux through both? I'm also wondering about the cooling fan....read some reviews that mention the fan noise. Is there a way to disable the fan when playing at low volumes?

The Z 12 is awesome!!! I prefer it over the G12M Creamback. It just sounds more "American!" I totally forget my fan is even running until I reach behind the amp and feel the cool breeze. If you decide to disconnect yours, you'll be replacing 6V6's faster than the rest of us......

I don't know about the Creamback because I have a combo with the Z Speaker. But I can't hear the fan even when I'm not playing.

Indeed. I may have been the one who wrote about the fan in the first place, cause I was surprised when I turned my amp on for the first time, but I don't even notice it anymore. What an amp!

I can't hear my fan either, and Doc says that it increases the life of the output tubes by a factor of 4, if memory serves. Really though...even when I'm not playing I can't hear the fan over the ambient room noise, even in a quiet room.

There's a fan noise attenuator on every Z amp.... it's called the Volume knob. If you hear the fan while playing, Turn it up.

Thank you poodle. I couldn't have said it better myself. Those are 240V fans running domestically at 120V or half speed. Maybe the Cello would be a better instrument Z

My z-lux head does not have a fan, but I run one on the power tubes--I feel it extends tube life but that may be a myth.

Thanks for that info doc--my lux head gets pretty warm and the fan really helps. Such a great amp.

I recall one time that the fan came unplugged and i played a one hour set without it running on my 2x12 Maz38 combo. The top of the amp was burning up.... the laminate material on the back of the chassis was totally warped from the heat. Never did that again.

Well I hear the fan ! It's not subtle the fan is loud when you re not playing. Did you sign up just to say this? Have you contacted the repairs dept. at the Z headquarters? Perhaps the fan is faulty....do you hear it when playing with the band in between songs or at home during quieter practice? Joe Walsh is quoted saying the ZLux is the best amp he's ever had....just curious.

It's appearance here really surprises me, because the Z-Talk forum seems to have the best Anti-Troll filter software on the internet.

Well if I might add. I looked at his E mail address and I believe he's from France. If so the 230V fans that I use in the domestic 120V amps are much quieter then it run at 230V export. So he may have a point , but a touch exaggerated maybe.

I mainly play single-coil pickups so a fan is way down the list of things that that cause noise.

I've a z lux for a couple months and just put in a creamback. I have a Maz 18 combo that I put a creamback in some time ago and after running the lux into the creamback in the maz combo and comparing I pulled the trigger. It's a season-to-taste thing: both good. Personally, I found the stock speaker to tend towards a harshness in the top end (I was running the treble low similar to the review video that went around a couple months ago.) I also don't mind that the creamback is a 96db speaker. It's just what I like.
It's just what I like. Set super clean with a tubescreamer and BB preamp on tap, I'm good to go.
As far as the fan, I agree with what's been said. I've never noticed it.

Z So I'm not the only French Z-Lux owner then! Your diagnostic sounds right to me, actually. I remember that when I got my Z-Lux last November, I was the very first to talk about the fan here. It makes sense that it's a little bit more noisy @230v than 120V. And for the record, I was not complaining back then, just surprised to be the first noticing and asking about it! But I can't say it disturbed me in anyway since. Maybe did I turn the master pot a step further!
