Before I dropped that kind of money I need to know a few things...
1. I never liked the "floor noise" or the way I could hear the Maz 18 reverb breath when it wasn't being played. Is this an issue with the Maz 8? I love how dead silent my Therapy is.
2. Is the Maz 8 loud enough for a band in a practice room or for a small club, and able to stay fairly clean at that kind of volume?
3. Does the 8 sound anything like the Blues Junior, which I'm a BIG fan of?
4. Does the 8 eat tubes more or less than other Z amps?
That's all I can think of at the moment. Any opinions, good or bad, will be very helpful. Thanks guys!

1. There's a little high frequency hiss and initially, it annoyed me a bit compared to my dead silent 18 NR. Swapping tubes apparently alleviates the problem a bit and it has improved magically by itself for me as well. Or I've gotten used to it? 2. Yes. This has recently been discussed a lot around here and I've posted a fair few posts about this in the last few weeks myself. Actually, quite a few. 3. I don't know the Blues Junior first hand but check out this post. 4. It's EL84s. They tend to get eaten. They're also dirt cheap. Use Sovjet tubes (6p14p) for longer life. Mine are still fine after more than a year of fairly heavy use and a lot of travel.

I can address the Blues Jr. part , I had a Blues Jr for years and there is no comparison - the Maz 8 is vastly better sounding. More articulate , fuller , rounder, detailed . Above all , no boxiness. I'm not just being a "booster" here , if I thought the Blues Junior was in the same camp I'd say so. It's just not. Just my 2 cents FWIW

It's the "hiss" that I remember hating on the 18. I mean, I intend this amp to be used for living room jams with family and buddies and also small gigs. It's embarrassing when somebody asks me "what's that noise".
Playing with a band isn't an issue as far as the hiss goes, but I'm in search of (preferably Dr. Z) something that can sound fabulous at low volume and with reverb. I'm so serious about this search that a Martin CEO 7 will probably be leaving my hands to finance what I want. I want a little amp that makes me say wow when I first hear it at low volumes.

I've got nos tubes throughout , use a Texas Heat and go between pentode and triode....dead silent. Maybe it's because mine is set clean and I get dirt from pedals, also I have the eq bypass mod (check it out) on my footswitch. I play a Buddy Guy USA strat with 25db boost and it sounds glorious in doors and out.
This amp is imho is perfect for any gig and at home.
You won't regret getting one. I have the studio combo by the way.

Being a single-ended amp with the reverb tank being relatively close to the power transformer in a small cabinet , there is some hiss when you crank the reverb up past 3 o'clock. While I found the 8 to be reasonably quiet , I didn't find it dead silent. But neither was my 1961 Fender Princeton , also a single ended amp. I never found the noise floor objectionable especially after I shielded the tank and put in a NOS JAN 12AT7 in the reverb slot. Just speaking from my experience YMMV.
