Had a noisy JJecc81 in V3 & didn't have an extra JJ so I used a Phillips JAN 12at7. It quieted down considerably. Should I go back to a new JJ? Haven't tried at high volume. Any disadvantages to using the Phillips?

I think you already found one advantage of the Phillips, less noise plus it should last a lot longer. I would keep it in there they are the same tube.

No disadvantage other than initial cost. It will most likely work out better long term though because it should outlast the JJ many times over.

Those JAN Phillips 12AT7's are a real bargain in the current NOS tube market. Everyone that has, or thinks they will have a use for them should be stocking up. I tried to sell a bunch to KCA NOS tubes a couple of years ago but Mike said he had a very large stock of them and didn't need them; hence the low price. I use them mostly for reverb drivers. I have about 20 NOS Mullard CV4024's that I use for phase inverters and frankly I can't tell much difference between them and the JAN Phillips tubes used in that position though.

Another good value tube for PI and reverb drivers are the RFT 12AT7 which are plentiful and reasonably cheap. l have a couple in my custom deluxe reverb and one in the reverb slot on my vibrolux. if you want a bit more control over the reverb level a 12AU7 works very well in the reverb driver position. l have a couple of old RCA 5963 which perform well and are a more rugged version of the AU7 and again cheaper than the equivalent age RCA AU7.
