I'm loving being back in the big bottle camp. I've developed quite an affinity for EL84 amps, but my heart will always belong to the big iron.
That being said, I've only really experimented with 6L6's and EL34's in various Boogies. I've also had great success with KT77's and found them to be the best combination of what I like about 6L6's and EL34's. I have a pair of Gold Lion KT77's coming for my Therapy.
The 5881's and 6V6's have me intrigued, as well. It is my understanding that a 5881 is basically a 6L6 with a lower output, meaning it will overdrive at about 70% of the output of a comparable 6L6. I don't have much experience with 6V6's, aside from the time I spent about 30 minutes noodling on an NMV Remedy. I don't think I've ever heard a bad clip of the Z28 or Remedy when opened up to their full potential, though.
Anybody out there have some stories about swapping tubes in the same amplifier??? School me.

You other brothers can't deny!I'm loving being back in the big bottle camp. I've developed quite an affinity for EL84 amps, but my heart will always belong to the big iron. I think the same thing sometimes. Specifically, whenever I plug into my Z-28, or my EZG-50, etc. There's just something so righteously fat and powerful about those big bottles that just "does it."

I have an amp that takes 6v6's, 6L6's, EL-34's, KT-66's, KT-88's. Everyone of the tubes sound great in that amp. I also have other big bottle amps that are out of this world. EL-84's though have their place and I like them to. The big bottles just don't have the chime of the 84's. I need some of all of them.

Gotta love a 40 Oz malt liquor.....Oh never mind not that kind do of bottle. Yes I love KT66 and EL34 tubes. O man does that bring back some great memories... followed by some not do great memories Yeah, I too feel most connected to big bottles...although the Ghia still feels like the perfect amp to me because it's so simple. But man I love the Therapy more everyday and have wanted a pair of KT77 as well. My first high dollar amp was a Divided by 13 SJT 10/20 which was 6V6, then after five or so years I found a great deal on a Ghia which I adored. Anyhow after also having a Monza I kits needed a bit more watts for the loud arse rock and roll I was playing. Enter the Therapy....it was then I realized how much I loved big bottle tubes, especially 6L6, which I had only heard in a Fender a Twin Reissue I had for a bit...just powerful and hold up under heavy playing without compressing into itself. For a power trio I might still want a Ghia Combo for ease of transport, but the Therapy gets me close to both Ghia and Monza as well as many other things...great MV.

Gotta love a 40 Oz malt liquor..... ...If I didn't have an acoustic gig in three hours.... How close is the first row? Walking distance from home by chance? What is your saturation level for humiliation? Would you smoke Kool cigarettes with said Malt liquor? dont write the idea off just because it seems like a bad choice that responsible adults shouldn't make
