I would say pretty much all of the Dr. Z line works great with the Z-Best. It's just that in one case, the Stang Ray, the 2x12 open back with Blues just goes way beyond "great".... You have to hear it to understand it. That said, not everyone feels that way. Just almost every single one except Curt. I resemble that remark ;D I just don't need that 'Ker-rang" that the Ray/Blues were designed for...BUT, that clean sustain, sparkly top and fat azz bottom of the Ray > Z Best works... swell ;D Well, I've been saying since I bought my Ray that I liked it with the Z-best, so I'm in the minority with Curt on that one... BUT I'm in the same boat as Curt in that I am not looking for as much chime or swirl either... I DO however, really like the Ray with a 2x12 open back with two Blues or two Weber bluedogs and/or a silverbell... similar to what others like to hear, such a GREAT clean sound... but for me, I liked the Z-best too for the balance between how the drive sounds from pedals and the cleans sound... all with more hair. So I liked the stock z-best alot with the Ray , and also liked the Z best when mixed with a Bluedog or silverbell... and then for a while now I've been using my Z-best with two 30 watt weber alnico blue dogs. which gives the goods Curts talking about, But also lets it chime and swirl away... I just put a pair of ceramic Tubbies in the Z-best and gave it a whirl... and I'm thinking of trying two greenbacks next just for fun. Z-best works with just about every amp in IMHO and for my style it works with the RAY very well too... it is great with alot of different speakers yet it's still hard to do any better than a stock one... just changes the flavor a little. .02 As much as I liked the Ray, the Rx's and Maz's just seem a better fit for me, but I'm glad Curt got to try the Ray again and really got to appreciate what it can do... for as long as he has it... until he sells it. ;D

Jason, I got a pair of Scumback Greeny's in my Z-Best. A M-55 and M-75. Sounds real nice with my Route 66.

Of course, the Ray through a Z-Best will sound awesome. I know a lot of other folks will say that they prefer the open-back 2x12 with alnicos with the Ray. I spent about 4 hours at a friend's house yesterday doing tone tests. We had 8 different Z amps running through every conceivable speaker/ cab combination we could think of. I think all of them sounded terrific. But we both agreed there was one combination that reached another level entirely. This may be considered heresy to some of you, but I thought the Stingray run into the convertible 1x12 with a closed back sounded absolutely heavenly with a G12H30. I was floored. It truly was phenomenal. My friend agreed as well. Try it, and tell me it's not amazing.

Our Stingray through our Z-Best is the the best setup I have ever heard/played.
Now you guys say the 2x12 open-back with two Blues will be even BETTER?
OK. We can live with that.
Nice cab as one's "spare" , the Z-Best... ;-)

I now own both a "standard" Z-Best, and an Dr. Z open-back 2x12 twin Alnico Blues.
I'm surprised to say, but with a 'Ray, the open-back wins.
They are a matched set, to my ears.
Ordered the Maz Junior NR to ease my pain.
Can't wait to hear the Maz Jr. NR on the 'Best.
