long time lurker, first time poster! anyway, my band was in the studio last night tracking drums for our next album and right before we're ready to roll our producer says "what's that crackling sound?!" so, we check my cables, pedal, batteries, guitars, and it turns out to be coming from the amp. the sound is like a crackling type sound that can be heard even when nothing is plugged into the amp.
later in the session i'd loose volume and the amp would cut in and out. i'm far from an amp expert but i'm guessing i just need new power tubes. my maz jr is about two years old and has never been retubed.
to the experts, does this sound like a power tube issue, or is there something more serious going on?
my amp is a 2x12 combo by the way.

this happened to me on a gig , called Z and he said tighten the 4 bolts on the top of the amp ........fixed it. I had my amp apart looking for this and that . so simple. the amp has to make a tight connection to the shield . hope this is your problem

... a bad tube could easily be the culprit as well...,.

Get out a pencil and start tapping the tubes. I would suspect one may be faulty.

Plug your guitar in and turn up the volume a bit. As you tap (use eraser end )you should hear the tapping through the speaker. This would indicate that the tube is probably micro-phonic. If the tube is good you shouldn't hear any noise. Try the pre-amp tubes first. I am sure others could elaborate more on this. Good luck.

b..........the guitar doesn't need to be plugged in, I just do it that way. I don't like the amp on without a guitar plugged in.

your 1st post is the exact thing that happened to my amp , might not hurt to try what the Dr said to do

thanks for the advice everyone! i tightened the screws on top of the amp which helped. i also did the "pencil test" and one of the tube is definitely microphonic so i'll be placing an order with myles later today!
