I just got a used Z28 head. I only had a few minutes to play with it last night before I had to leave for work and to be honest it sounded rather sterile. No life especially coming from just playing the Therapy.
I shut it off and looked at the tubes. The ef86 was cool when I went to grab it. I pulled it and actually had no idea what the tube was. I have come to figure out it is a Winged C 6k32pi, which means ef86 I guess. The other numbers below it are 8801, and I have no idea what they mean because looking at pictures of these tubes on the internet they all have different numbers.
So anyway, when I got home this morning I conducted a little test, just turned the amp on fully and let it sit for a few minutes. All the tubes except the ef86 were glowing and hot to the touch including the Sovtek ax7 in v2. The ef86 had the faintest of glow at best, even with the lights off, and such a mild temp change I could barely tell if it warmed up at all. Don't have any other ef86 amps. Is this normal? Could it be an issue with the sound?
I will get a chance to play more later today, but I thought I would ask.
I plan to get an RFT ef86, TungSol 6v6's, and a JJ 5751 tubes to replace the current tubes. Amp was built in 2013. Do you think new tubes will make a huge difference or is this amp just not for me?
When I first turned it on it reminded me of the m12 that I played in a music store. I really didn't care for the m12 and thought it was very dull. Then it dawned on me, ef86 front, similar tone controls... hmmmmm, maybe these 2 amps are more similar than I thought. I just loved the Therapy so much I wanted to try another Z and it seemed like people are raving about the Z28 everywhere so I saw a good price and bought it on a whim. Like I said I had very little time with it, so I will be giving it more of a chance. Hopefully the tubes bring it to life.
