I think about the only style guitar I'm missing from my arsenal is a Telecaster style guitar. The American Teles I've played are very hit and miss, more than Nashville Gibsons, and I don't know if I could bring myself to pay $4,000 for a custom shop Tele.
Are there any private builders out there like Nash or Crook that build set neck Teles? I'd love to have a set neck Tele style guitar with a P90 in the bridge. I was hoping to see something at NAMM that would grab my attention, but nada.

If you want something tele inspired but unique try Asher Guitars. He makes masterpieces. I have a Marc Ford Model.....just perfect. Here is his T Deluxe www.asherguitars.com/pages/t-deluxe

I have two G&L ASAT guitars. USA models both. I understand the inconsistency of the Fender. A used G&L comes at a significant savings and in most cases will match against many custom shop Fenders. YMMV, but it's worthy of consideration.

I think G&L's are a great bargain. Most have build quality in line with CS Fenders for half the cost. That being said, the ones I've been able to play had a funky fretboard radius that I didn't like. I think it was 7.25 as it most certainly wasn't 9". I'm used to Gibson 12" radius boards.

The John Page "AJ" looks rather interesting with Tele pick-up in bridge and a P90 in the neck. Decent price at $1649.

A Fano SP6 could fit also: Tele bridge and bridge pickup (Fralin), Les Paul contour, P90 (also Fralin) in the neck and set neck...

I'm used to Gibson 12" radius boards. This could be the problem. Good luck with your search.

+1 for the G&L's. They have a crazy variety of models to get you different places. Actually, most of the G&L's I've played had 12" radius boards. As far as production model stuff goes, that's your best bet.
As far as getting something built for you goes, G&L's still cheaper than most of your other options, and the models are all crazy customizable. My super spec'ed out tele build with just about every extra option they had still only ran me just over 2k...

A Fano SP6 could fit also: Tele bridge and bridge pickup (Fralin), Les Paul contour, P90 (also Fralin) in the neck and set neck... I grew up in Eastern PA and had the pleasure of touching some of the very early Fano models. Now that they are a member of the PBG, I can say that I'm not really a big fan-o' Fano any longer. I don't think Dennis has actually built a guitar in a long time...

For having such a wide dealer network in California, they have very little product on the shelves...

Another +1 for the G&L... I love my ASAT Classic. Throw in a Callaham bridge and some pickups to taste and you've got a killer tele.

G&L's are definitely great great guitars and worthy of consideration. My personal advice as one who managed to play guitar for around thirty years before getting a tele is simply to try as many as you can get your hands on for a month or two. You'll get a better idea of what you're looking for exactly in terms of neck wood, radius, body material, pickups, bridges, etc. In my case I found a used bridge pickup that I had liked in a different tele and built up from there part by part. The end result was good, but a little tweaking by a local tech and it was much, much better. I'm still not sure if it's a lifer, but I should be able to recoup most of what I spend on putting it together if I do sell.

I have one Custom Shop, one American 52 reissue, one Mexican 50's classic and one Squier Classic Vibe Custom...all are fantastic guitars in their own right. The Squier can and does hold its own to the more pricey stuff in my closet!

Love the Nash stuff; very reasonable, especially used. Lots of choice in terms of configuration, great pickups, both of mine came set up really well. Plus, they really do have a vintage-y vibe, for half the price of a Fender relic.

I would love to find this somewhere... Frank, Maybe consider detailing your specs and buy the parts from Warmoth or similar. When I had both of my guitars constructed at a local shop it became a community event to check out progress and BS. The end results of my custom parts casters are some really nice playing guitars. I have had a lot of fun researching specifications and such. I would sew my own clothes if I thought I could make something cool!

I've already demonstrated how picky and high maintenance I can be in this thread!

I got Tele fever after being around here a year or so. (Thanks Mark N!!) All this talk about Tele's & Z's. I found a '04 '52 RI in the BST and pulled the trigger. I loved it, but being the tinkerer I am....the only thing on it that's Fender is the neck & tuners. Sounds better than ever and one of my favorite guitars.

I have a G&L ASAT classic that has been a reliable tool for over 25 yrs. Also use an FSR (fender special run) tele and although the neck is not my favorite shape it plays well. Both are pretty affordable on the used market.

They'll do a 12" radius, too. I wonder if I could talk them into setting that neck for me and blasting the whole thing Shoreline Gold?!?!?!

I know the Nashes so I give my vote for their guitars every chance i get. They do quite a few different pickup combos and i follow Bill's son on Instagram and the pix he puts up of tele's are constantly giving me G.A.S.... then again, you won't find a set neck tele from Nash. you might check out Stone Tree for aesthetics... Roscoe has a signature model you may like: www.stonetreeguitars.com/featured_guitar.htm
