I had all three of the Maz series. I started out with a Maz 18 Reverb combo 1x12. Then I added a Maz 38 Reverb combo 2x10. I like using different cabinets and different combinations, so I sold my combos and replaced them with heads. I hardly ever used the Maz 38, so I sold it. I got a Maz 8 combo in 2013, and use that the most because of the small gigs I play. It's perfect. I like all the Maz's. But going from one EL 84, to two EL 84's, to 4 EL 84's, there's a big difference. Love when those 4 El84's are cooking pretty good, but I just don't play the type of venues anymore. As always YMMV.

The TV Jones upgrade for your 6120 may worth it. My 6120 SSLVO was amazing into the Maz 8. Still my most missed piece of gear.

It sounds good with everything, but it seems to be the soulmate of my CS 50's Thinline Telecaster. Throw an EGO compressor in between em'.....woooooo!!! She takes peels really well too; KOT,Velvet Fuzz, Shaker vibrato, loves em. My 38,not so much...the 8??? Yep.

Yeah, for some reason my 8 eats pedals noticeably better than my 18NR as well. May be the difference in the NR version, may be the tubes. My 8 came with these: V1: Tung-Sol 12AX7 (1104) V2: Ruby 12AX7AC5 HG+ (on sticker) 7025SS/12AX7A (on glass) V3: JJ ECC 81 V4: Sovtek 7025/12AX7WB (1010) V5: Mullard 12AX7/ECC83 (1009) V6: 6p14p 77 CCCP V7: JJ GZ 34 S I've since read a lot of mixed opinions about the JJ GZ 34 S and since I wasn't sure whether it was tested and put in by the Doctor or someone else, I replaced it with a NOS Mullard I had lying around. I'm not sure if this whole setup was the Doc's standard configuration but I somehow doubt it. Some of these tubes are a fairly more expensive than the configuration my 18NR came with (2x JJ ECC83S, 1x Sovtek 12AX7LPS, 2x EHX EL84, 1x Sovtek 5AR4). I've re-tubed it with 5751s in V1 and V2 and a pair 6p14ps to clean it up a little but the 8, strangely, feels like it has a little more clean headroom.

Interesting , I use a very similar array but different slots. I have the Ruby in V1 and TungSol in V2. Sovtek 12AX7LPS for PI , and a Sovtek rectifier that came new with the amp. I have the Mullard in V4 reverb.

The TV Jones upgrade for your 6120 may worth it. My 6120 SSLVO was amazing into the Maz 8. Still my most missed piece of gear. Indeed. i had a talk with two of my Gretsch buddies yesterday, and asked them if they had ever experienced a similar thing. Both replied with a resounding YES!! Lol i was afraid it was just me. But they both reported that while wonderful....Gretsch's can be really, really tempermental. They've both had the issue with the Filtertrons,as well as odd playability issues. Not the usual "dead strings-too humid-too dry-stored next to a TV-Yada Yada, but just..."Nope....not gonna twang today, play the Tele." kinda thing. Which is a relief, because I though my treasured 6120 had ****-the-bed for good. Apparently...it's just a phase.

Ordered a slipcover for it tonight btw. I suspect she'll be carried about lots so a wee bit of protection can't hurt.

Congrats, great amp. You just made me wanting to play mine, which I haven't for a while. It's my Z-Lux fault, I guess! So I go play, thanks to you ianrossiter. I need to get mine out again!

I'm away from home and Z-Lux, but I have my MAZ 8 with me. Glad I do. Sounds fantastic, as always.

So different from the Z-Lux... and still so great sounding amp! I've played mine a few times since my last post here and I just did play both the Z-Lux and Maz 8 today. The Z-Lux is hard to beat in the clean and almost clean territories, but the Maz 8 has such a juicy gainy feel to it. Amazing amp(s), for sure!

My Maz 8 turned green blond and my Z-Lux is more creamy browny blond, so they're ll so nice looking together... BUT, I agree, it feels like a perfect combination to me!
