Picked up my new MAZ 8 at Long & Mcquade,Edmonton South yesterday. needes a smaller, quieter, more portable amp for a lot of things, so my beloved MAZ 38 can stay home more often and be brought out for bigger shows, ect. Mine is the Black/Tan Studio model, made Feb 2015. Boy this little beast is awesome!! Exactly what I wanted. I never thought I'd like something as much as my 38 but this 8 is just awesome!! LOVES my Telecaster!! Great gritty,Z TONE. That reverb....WOW!! My 38 used to sound like that, now it's barely audible. The Bypass switch gives a HUGE volume boost,as well as grit. Lovely. Happy, happy boy here.

Y'kmow what the best part is? i no longer have to compromise!! My 38 has been such a huge part of the equation for so long that playing anything else...well,was horrible. Now, I can have my Tone, and feel in a much more compact form. Small gig? No problem! Smal studio when space/volume are restricted? No problem!! Light grab n go Amp?? no Problem!! So bloody happy with this Amplifier.

With the pentode/triode/tone bypass options you have a very diverse amp. Also, depending on what speaker you use can change to tonal options as well. Don't forget to carry an extra EL84 with you though!! I found out the hard way.

As a confirmed Maz 38 user, can I ask why you chose the Maz 8 over the 18 to complement your 38? I'm interested, as I've been thinking of replacing my Ghia head with a Maz Jr/rev, but that might be too close to the 38, whereas the Maz 8 would definitely be a contrast. The Ghia is great, but I prefer the Maz flavour more. Thanks.

I've got a Maz 8 but I've never played it's bigger brothers, and I've always wanted to hear them side by side.

As the owner of a MAZ 18 Jr NR head, this thread is NOT helping to suppress my urge to pick up a MAZ 8 studio combo...

As the owner of a MAZ 18 Jr NR head, this thread is NOT helping to suppress my urge to pick up a MAZ 8 studio combo... Mark, if you ever get up around the Flint (Swartz Creek) area, bring your Maz 18 head and we can do a side by side comparison with my Maz 8 studio combo. It's currently loaded with a G12H30, but I have a Blue too. I've also got a Z 2x10 cab w/Z-10 and several other cabs...it would be a blast. I'd like to hear the Maz 18 alongside my Therapy and Z-Lux too. We can get as loud as we like.

If I'm being hand-on-heart honest....I've never liked the 18. i really wanted to...but there's something about it I just can't warm up to. There was one time; a MAZ 18 head,Z-Best cab- 59ri Les Paul. THAT was incredible!! But anytime I've plugged my Telecaster into one,I haven't dug it at all...and I LOVE my 38. My 38 is like a limb,it's just the other half of the equation. Anything else just sucks....until now. Size and volume had a lot to do with the decision too. Now I know the 8 is based on the 18, but for whatever reason I bonded with it instantly. As soon as we extracted the amp from the shipping box,and plugged it in. Now,the 38 IS cleaner,of course. But I'm really digging the grit of the 8. With the studio projects I have comming up,I'll have a much easier time with engineers and producers than I've had recently. They recoil when I bring in my 38....it scares them!! Now everyone's happy, and I didn't really have to compromise at all. Just the opposite. Also, I play with some groups who go Direct onstage; V-drums,Bass,ect,with very low stage volumes. This is perfect for those gigs. I've still got my 38 for bigger shows,or ones with heavy handed drummers, ect.

Just wondering, what mode do you guys use most often? Pentode or Triode? Around the house,I've just been using the Triad mode. Great, low volume practice levels. Thanks.

I like the punch of the Pentode mode. The Triode mode is sweet but I always end up back on Pentode.

I have a hunch that if I bought a Maz 18 it would end up much like my Ghia, used occasionally at home but the Maz 38 would still be the one I'd still take out. The 8 could give me a different choice altogether, and also be quieter and more versatile than my old Deluxe Reverb, which is actually still too loud for many situations.

I play pentode probably 80% of the time , because it really suits the type of music I play most often ( 60's era rock ). Occasionally I'll go to triode when I want to kick down the volume or want that old-school breakup with an SG or LP Standard.

I'm with Mike (doctorice) on this. I had a Maz 18 while still owning the 8 and I used the triode setting for a different sound, or sound I wasn't able to get before. But when I took the 8 to an outdoor gig a few months ago, I realized it wasn't as loud as I perceived at home, so with a flick of the switch I had pentode - and more volume. I wound up selling the 18 in favor of the 8 because of the lower volume gigs I usually play. I can always use my other Z's if I have a large club or arena gig!

Such a great amp. Sound-wise, I prefer pentode but the suppressed transients in triode mode make using it in an inner city flat a lot more viable.

Triode with eq bypass at home (usually) for rock/blues stuff. Triode with eq bypass at jam (usually) for rock/blues stuff. Pentode if I want it brighter or louder. I have a few boost pedals to change things up at jam as well. ME

Fantastic amp, so versatile without any naff settings. Takes pedals so well, I run mine straight into the front and they all sound great....fuzz, tube driver, muff, delay etc etc Very responsive to the volume on my strat...guess it's the same regardless of which style of instrument. Thanks Dr Z

Steve, What speakers do you drive with the Maz 8? I have used a Gold, Creamback, WGS ET65, Jensen P12Q, and now have the G12h back in there. The Gold was great for Pentode but the Creamback and G12h sound great with both P/T options. The Jensen was supposed to get me more American sound, and it sounded nice in my music room as well as being light, but it didn't hold up in a gig situation. The ET65 was good as well but I prefer the Celestions.
I did try it with my 2x10 cab loaded with Jupiter 30 watt speakers and that sounded way cool in the triode mode. I have the Maz 8 combo and not the head version so not a option when gigging.

I also discovered how versatile it is. Had zero issues dialling in for my Dano 6-string Bass, which dosnt always sound good with other amps. You have to dump all the Bass and an adult portion of midrange, while goosing the Treble and Reverb. She held up nicely. Hopefully....Wampler will introduce their hinted EQ pedal at NAMM,so I can preset that EQ setting to make using it Live much easier/quicker.Otherwise, I'll grab a stray BOSS EQ. I also tried a Les Paul and my Firebird...Oooh...yep. Even my Strat sounds good with it. IV been having some issues with my Gretsch 6120 lately, she sounds really, really dull. Not sure why. It might be time to shell out for the TV Jones upgrade. It was hard dealing her in,in any case. But I'm thinking its a guitar issue, not an Amp issue. Tonight, I'm taking her to her first Session; Rockabilly and Blues. Tomorrow, we go to Edmonton for a Country/Rock session.

Hmmmm. Maybe try your "slap" delay into the effects loop!
Have fun with the 8 and report back.

If you're gonna use the fx loop, remember to add a buffer with a very short patch cable right after the send, though. It's pretty unusable otherwise.
