I am still considering buying a MAZ Jr. It would be nice not to have to pay retail for one. Just curious about what kind of caps are used in Z's amps? Anyone tried the GT 12AX7M , a Chinese version of mullard 12AX7. I've used these in all my fender amps and they do make a difference. How does the Jr sound with the "standard " Z speakers? Would Weber's sound better in these amps? How about upgrading the caps to Sozo's? Again, I appreciated your time and input! Many thanks!

i used the gt mullard copys in my orange for a long time and i put them in my z when i first got it. one of them literally "blew" up. like just cracked and then shattered. one did the same in my friends orange. i found that for the price it was totally not worth it. i just use JJs and they work wonderfully.

MAZ Jr really needs no tinkering. They are designed to sound great right out of the box. Plus, it's pretty apparent that Dr. Z designs his amps around the modern (read= AVAILABLE!) tube options from Europe and Asia. With a Dr. Z, which is a PRO model amp in every aspect of it's design, stop worrying about tweaking and worry more about your playing!!! Seriously, though.....My MAZ 18 with 2 10's is BONE STOCK. And in it's stock form, I have toured the country with several national artists, as well as used it for several master recording sessions here in Nashville. The stock Z 10's are anything but "generic." They are a loud, British-flavored speaker that has plenty of punch and quite aggressive..... The good Doc obviously spent considerable time on the design and had a little help & input from Ted Weber. The speakers match the amp very nicely and are VERY versatile. I have a great relationship with Ted Weber and endorse his products.....But still have the stock Z speakers in my MAZ Jr because.....well....."If it ain't broke....." ;-)

...i'm a tinkerer by nature and the only thing i've done to my maz jr is stuck a nos RCA 12ax7 in the V1 spot...maybe it warmed the amp up a hair....the stock speakers are fabulous but they did need a little playing time at stage volume to break in...just a killer amp out of the box.....

Z has spend a heck of a lot of time playing with speakers, tubes, components etc.....Not only would I not try and second guess him, but honestly the MAZ 18 is perfect right out of the box.....well........give the speakers a few weeks of hard play to break in.....but you know what I mean!
All of the pro studio and touring musicians I have sold Z's to are using them bone stock.

I would have to agree with the Dr's choice of speakers and tube choices. I have tried to 2nd guess him a couple of times only to come back to stock...go figure.

I agree that if you really need to mess with the amp too much then it's either not the amp for you or there's something wrong in your head;D
