Need some education here on octal tube pre-amps. Been doing some reading up on them (old Supro amp was on my mind) and they seem like a "Hi-Fi" type tube that would be desirable to munfactures but I find that not many build amps with them. When reading up on some they seem to remind me of some discriptions of the Therapy. What would keep manufactures away from using them?

Here are some of the major reasons: 1. BOM cost (octal preamp tubes and their sockets) were more expensive in the 50s-60s. 2. Size: the octals used more space and it was wise to add more space around them. 3. Some of the old octals were a little noisy, or required special heater design to avoid some hum. There were hopes in higher gain guitar amps that shorter plates would be less likely to be microphonic. 4. Projected availability: there were already more Gm variants of novals than octals and a lot of amp makers embraced the newer, smaller tubes. That has a lot of weight in the marketplace.

Current amp maker, Little Walter Amps, uses octal preamp tubes.
I'm sure there are others, but this is one I came across recently.
