Looking for a new Z amp for blues and blues rock. Will the z28 handle that? The route 66 is probably going to be too much. Can you 28 owners convince me to get the z28?

Depending on what speakers you have in your 1x12 cabs as well as if you use any boost or OD pedals, you should be very satisfied. You have the option of using a 5751 or 12AX7 along side the EF86 for more or less break up. I use mine with either a Gold, Creamback, G12h, or two 10's (Jupiter's) and it sounds great with all of them. Good luck on your search!

I use Weber silver bells in 1x12 and 2x12 cabinets. I just sold my maz Jr to help fund another Z purchase and have mainly been looking at the z28 but now I'm second guessing myself and wondering if I should have kept the maz Jr so now I'm in a dilemma of ordering the 28 or getting the maz back.

Were here to help you through this difficult time.
I haven't had the pleasure of playing the Z 28 but I am just killing time until someone jumps in and talks you through all of the great benefits of moving forward with the 28.
Can I get some help here

I'm a Z28 owner and previous Maz 18 owner. I could be very happy with the Maz 18 but I'm more of a 6V6 or 6L6 kind of guy. They are pretty different in my book.
Dig them both.

I'm with Surfhard on this as well. I have the Maz 8 (which is one EL84 with tonal options) but I sold my Maz 18 and still have my two 6V6 heads - the 28 and Remedy. The Maz wasn't bad at all, I just preferred the ones I kept.

My current rig is a Z-28 for clean and a Monza for dirty, but I'm pretty sure I could get there with the Z-28 and my Z-Drive. I just haven't gotten the opportunity since I just got the Z-Drive.
One night, I was playing outside with my Z-28 on 333 and a Gibson SG and wow. I've never gotten to do that again because of volume constraints indoors.

You're all starting to convince me to go with the 28. I've never read a bad review on one and most who have them love them and those who had one want it back. I suppose I could buy the 28 and always get another maz Jr later down the road.

Bloozeman,
Can you buy the amp as equipment for your music business and take a straight line depreciation on the equipment? You would have to account for the sale of the red 18. (I am serious)
Dr. Z keeps the lights on, the sales tax goes to the local economy, the income tax goes to the big vortex, however if there is a box that says Donate $1.00 to actively pursue ISIS, please check that box.
You get a new Z 28, our economy prospers and it would be nice if we could fund a terrorist extermination program.
Your Z 28 purchase is patriotic!

Z28 is Dr Z's favorite.

Really? I would have thought it would be the MAZ Jr. That has me thinking. Maybe I should demo one. My local dealer just has never had one in stock to try out.

I think you should; I should probably demo a Maz for the same reasons - proven performance and lasting user enthusiasm.

Hows the headroom on the Z28? I found I had plenty of it when I had my Maz jr, would I have enough with the 28?

The loudest and cleanest tones are at noon on all three knobs; after that it starts giving up the goods. I will tell you that, although mine is a 1x10 combo with CGold, it's pretty loud by itself, and if I add either my 1x12 open back Mesa cabinet or my 2x12 cabinet with Vin30s I can hang with just about anybody.

More headroom than the Maz 18.

i love mine (and my ghia) with alnico gold - so your silver bells should sound great too yes - plenty of clean before noon (all 3 knobs) and more dirt post noon (all interactive) I sold mine a while ago & missed it's simple organic tone so much , i had to re-purchase one here. also loved my maz , but sold it for the simpler layout of the ghia & z28 - and i use with small 1x12 for small gigs & larger cab for outside gigs - plenty of power when given the breathing room. - I equate the ghia to a "better" vox and the z28 to a "better" deluxe amp - imho - good luck

The z28 is a really dynamic amp. In my opinion, the best blues guitar players are all about dynamic playing. It's a perfect amp for that style of music but certainly isn't limited to it.

I've had mine 10 years, and love it still. I play a weekly solo gig and use a Z-28 1x10 combo. It responds to what your hands do. It just plays well.
