I spent a great deal of time with the ABY going back and forth comparing the differences between the 18 and 38. I have to say, most of the magic I loved about the 38 is attributed to those 2x10 speakers.
I need to work on finding a nice compromise between the 18 and the Monza. I have the Monza dialed in for some pretty aggressive tones at the moment. Polar opposite of the Maz.

Interesting re the 38 and 18. I like the 2x10 a lot, fwiw. My bassist and I bounced them around, to the 12" Z speaker, to the 2x10's and to the G12H. Once we had the perceived volume between the two amps dialed in, there was a point where he wasn't telling me which amp was active and half the time I couldn't even distinguish between the two. When I knew which amp I was chugging on, my ears would say the 38 was more refined and smooth, the 18 grittier and more in your face. The 18, obviously, breaks up much sooner and isn't nearly as loud. I would say the 38 sounded better with the Z Drive as well. I had to change my settings on the Z Drive quite a bit for use with the Maz 18. Maybe my ears just aren't that good, but those were my thoughts. As much as I'm digging the 12" Z speaker, I thought the 2x10's sounded best with both amps.

I think they all have there own character somewhat...my reverb/reg cab smoother laid back than my studio... yet to try 2/10's I'd agree with you, as well. I think it's all dependent on how you use them. If you're going for pristine cleans or playing with a multi piece band, then, yes, the amps are going to be different animals. I was in the camp of thinking they were different enough that I would end up keeping both. As someone who spent most of his time trying to get the 38 to the point of break up at manageable volumes, the 18 just fits what I do better and I've found that I can live without the 38. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the 38, as it was the amp that turned me on to Z's. I could see myself eventually owning another Sr somewhere down the line.

I went back and forth between 18NR 1x12 and 18NR 2x10 only two or three times before definitely going for the 2x10... such a fantastic combination.
