...for the gig to start. She was sitting there all pretty, waiting patiently to transform silence into luscious musical ear candy. Oh how she snapped, and popped, and growled, and whispered. Such a sweet night with my sweet lady Maz. She may only be an "18(Jr)", but she's a full on adult beast! And I realize there is a section for posting pics, but what the heck. She asked me to post her selfie...

We have to get you guys some guitar stands.... The guitar/amp lean is a sure sign of bad-assery...

According to my good friend and guitar tech, guitar/amp lean can lead to pickup demagnetizing. The large speaker magnets can do nasty things to pickups. I use a stand, less chance of someone "accidentally" knocking it over. Nice pix btw.

Haha, well spotted... most of these pictures are from either of our two tours this year where everything not absolutely necessary had to stay at home. We still broke the rear suspension of our van. :/

Great pics, Dergit! Love the last when where the audience has their back to the stage and the Maz is looking at them.

I do have guitar stands and sometimes use them (mostly for the second guitar, as I am in with the Les Paul in the photo I posted). Mostly do the lean for the convenience of grab-and-go...but it does add to a certain badassery Thanks for the tip, jimiata!

Why lean 'em when you can just plop 'em down on top of the amp? Les Pauls don't really sound all that good until the headstock's been broken off and re-attached two or three times anyway....

Hey Dergit.... I've directed my amps this way before too, to spare the poor souls on the front row, but I surely did get some shxx from my drummer and my other guitarist. Do you set up like this frequently, or was it just because of stage height / closeness of front row. Today when I'm in this situation, I orient the amp forward, but I do tilt it back in order to spare the front row's eardrums....

Ahem... just a point of order.
It seems both of you Maz amps are missing an important control.
Just teasing! :-)
Great amps with or w/o verb. Eddie

Do you set up like this frequently, or was it just because of stage height / closeness of front row. Today when I'm in this situation, I orient the amp forward, but I do tilt it back in order to spare the front row's eardrums....
For me, it depends on these factors: - Space (where can I even put this 30kg thing?)
- Microphones (is there a channel for me? I'll even bring my own e606 most of the time)
- Monitors (can I get one?)
- Volume on stage and volume in the room (I like us to be no louder than necessary)
Whenever there's a crowd over, say, 100 people and the main signal they hear is coming from the PA, it doesn't really matter where I put my amp. It could be back stage with a microphone so I figure it's best used as a stage monitor so I can hear myself during the show. The crowd gets the mix as intended without my amp interfering and the Brake Lite is usually on 3 or 4 in these situations as to not encourage the drummer to hit harder... He has his own in-ears so he can ask for the guitar to be turned up if he needs it as well. In smaller clubs where there's, say, 20-50 people and we're playing a rehearsal room type setup where the "PA" is really only there for synths, vocals and kick drum but the bass, guitars and drums have to make their way out on their own, we'll place our amps to get the biggest, best distributed sound we can under the circumstances. Thus, they're directed at the audience but placed somewhere where ideally we can hear what we're doing too. Brake Lite usually on 1 or 2. To date, in 30 shows this year, it's never been off, except for the first leg (5 shows) after which I immediately bought it. Volume and Master are at 10-11 o'clock but it's a really loud amp. Also, in these situations, I'm particularly happy I opted for the 2x10" instead of the 1x12". It just sounds so much bigger and badder on its own to me. But I'm confident, the Maz 8 would hold its own should it ever need to leave home and step in.

Ahem... just a point of order. It seems both of you Maz amps are missing an important control. Just teasing! :-) Great amps with or w/o verb. Eddie In February, I spent 3 solid hours playtesting the Route 66, the MAZ 8 Studio combo, the MAZ 18 as head/cab (2x12), 1x12 combo and 2x10 combo and the MAZ 18 NR as 1x12 combo and 2x10 combo. I preferred the MAZ 18 NR 2x10 by a fair bit for the following reasons (in the mood for lists today... feel particularly German this evening, it seems): - I always use a Strymon BigSky on stage. It does all the reverbs I need. And I don't like to mix it with noticeable spring reverb.
- I'm not a huge fan of spring reverbs as soon as you can make them out (I use it in my MAZ 8 at home set just above off to add some dimension to the single speaker at low volumes).
- The low-mid bite of the NR is just so damn sweet and I find it lacking in the reverb version. They overdrive very similarly but not completely identical. The NR feels tighter, more sustain but less decay, more and faster attack, less sag, less bottom end compression, more lower mid saturation, less fizzy treble grinding sound. All this is just my impression and the Doc is very welcome to quote me here, call me a raging idiot and explain how the circuits are 100% identical.
- I went combo over head/cab for portability reasons. Also the slight high-mid focus (less low end but tighter sound from the 10"s over the 12"s I tried) won me over. This amp cuts through any mix perfectly.
- Bizarrely, two combos (MAZ 8 Studio and MAZ 18 NR 2x10") cost me the same (within 100$) as one MAZ 18 NR head with a 1x10 for home and a 2x10 for the stage would have. Thanks. I'll happily not carry my amp around after every rehearsal or show and instead have one always set up for practice and recording at home. Not to mention the reliable backup amp I get for less than 100$. I never got why speakers and cabs in combos are essentially free.

Joe Walsh told me the exact same thing about LP's. Z

If that's the case I'm gonna have to get careless with my LP. Regarding leaning your guitar against the amp, if you can hear the hum coming out of your amp increase when you set your guitar near it, that means the transformer's magnetic field is getting to the pickups and you're too close to the amp. It seems to me that in the photo of the LP on the Bassman there's trouble a-brewin'...I'd sure like to be wrong about this one. The physics of magnets is a fascinating field of study. It's way more complex than I ever realized before I went back to school in my 40's.

If you look at a Maz 18 head and a 1x12 extension cab, you're at roughly $2148 depending on options. A Maz 18 1x12 combo runs you $1819, so that leaves ~$330 for a speaker, extra wood, wiring and labor. You're right, though, I still think you get the better deal by going combo.

Current prices on proguitar.de/ProGuitar.de/DR._Z.html, where I bought my Z stuff: MAZ 18 NR head: 1790€ 1x12 cab: 740€ 2x10 cab: 740€ = 3270€ MAZ 18 NR 2x10 combo: 1990€ (phew, I still got it for 1690€ before the Euro went down hard!) MAZ 8 Studio 1x12 combo: 1750€ = 3740€ So yeah, I got the numbers mixed up a bit and it's not as close as I thought, but still: You essentially get the MAZ 8 amp for 470€. Again, I'll happily pay that for a great backup, the always ready to go practice and recording setup, the dual amp option when recording "properly" and not having to carry my amp home after rehearsals and gigs.

I'm with you, dude. 2 amps for a little 500 Euro extra??? Sign me up!!!
I'm sure the way Doc streamlines the sizes of the 1x12, 2x10, 1x10, etc., cabs with the combos helps keep those combo prices aggressive, too.
