...the Maz 18 and Maz 38??? A couple months ago, I toyed with trading my 38NR for an 18NR, but I ultimately decided not to. I love the headroom of the 38NR and its versatility with pedals, but ever since I played an 18NR with EQ bypass, I've been gassing for one bad. I just think it would sit perfectly in between my 38NR and the Monza. I'd just like a little bit more Maz crunch at usable volumes.
So let's hear it, who has both and how do you justify owning both?

I know. I'm so glad there's no Z dealer within 100 miles of me. I'd be flat broke...

I think it would come down to how quickly you needed to get into the amp's sweet spot. I'm a new Maz 18 Jr. owner, and I find for the places I play (smaller clubs and pubs) that the 18 watts is more than enough to get me where I want to go. If I had an amp with more clean headroom, I know the volume jump from 18 watts to 38 watts is probably negligible - maybe 2 or 3 dB? - but I get the impression the higher-wattage amp would be "stuck" in a lower gear, so to speak. But on a larger stage or outdoor venue, I'd imagine the 38 would really come into its own, exhibiting some of the sweetness that the 18 does in smaller venues. My two cents, anyway. I'd love to own more Z amps but my Maz 18 is all I can handle right now.

I *really* wonder which venue the 18 would ever be too small for. Yes, sometimes, rarely, I feel it lacks clean headroom... so I turn down Volume and Master and take the Brake Lite back to 2 or rarely even 1 and I'm fine. I've almost never been able to play a gig with the Brake Lite completely off and there have been some open air stages on the larger side this summer. In clubs, I always end up with the Brake Lite on 3 or 4. Sometimes 2 if there ever are no mics on the guitar amps.
Is the 38 really that much better with pedals?

Is the 38 really that much better with pedals? Oh, it is, but I don't use many effects with a dirty signal. Maybe a little delay and chorus on slight break up. Right now, I'm using a Z Drive to coax a little bit of dirt and grind out of the 38 and it sounds amazing. However, I found that I was doing a lot more tap dancing on buttons than I would prefer for most gigs. The 38 is just so versatile, I've even used it as an acoustic guitar amp in a pinch. It just has its own personality. Where the 18 is Vox-y/Marshall-y, the 38 is Vox-y/Fender-y.

I see... might have to give it a spin one day and complete the MAZ family?

18 watts is a great sweet spot power and volume wise. Most places you can use 18 watts with no issue, unless you have a really loud drummer. I have amps at
1 - 10 watts EL84 1 - 17 watts EL84 2 - 30 Watters EL84 1 - 32 watts KT66 1 - 50 watts EL34 Oh and I want a Delta 88 too
They all have their place and tone and use. So basically for me it is a tool chest. More tools the more situations you can cover correctly or effectively. Just buy it sir. You will not regret it.

I have a 38 SR Reverb 2x12 combo. It is a heavy bastard but has some nuances my Maz 18 NR 1x12 combo doesn't. The differences can be attributed to 2 speakers versus 1 and maybe 4 tubes versus 2 perhaps or maybe some kind of magic components or Foo Foo dust. Yes you could live with only one but if you want to expand your sonic pallet then having both achieves that. I love them both but if I had to choose for the music I play it would be the 38. The 38 was my first Z and I will not part with it or my Maz 18 NR either. Hell, I won't part with any of my other Z's for that matter. Remember, you can only have one wife (at a time) but you can have more than one amp and guitar...

Yep, I've already concluded that I'm going to pick up a Maz 18 NR. I have one of my semi-hollows on eBay right now and I'll be taking the proceeds from that and grabbing an 18 NR head.
Then, all that's left is to try out the head with my 1x12 G12H and my 2x10 Z Specials.

I LOVE the Maz 38 but rarely get to use it. It is a bit different than the 18 to me too, a bit bolder and can be a bit smoother to me... sweet amp and If I ever do need a bit more than the 18 I'm happy to have the 38. " Is the 38 really that much better with pedals?" "The 38 is just so versatile, I've even used it as an acoustic guitar amp in a pinch. It just has its own personality. A good description, plus the Maz Sr can get marshally too... very very versatile.
I personally don't think the Maz Sr is better with pedals, just takes em a little bit differently... still similar, just a bit bigger overall and more low end. I usually don't have to change the setting of my pedals at all switching between them... I do sometimes roll off a bit of low end for the Maz Sr cause it's a bit bigger / fuller bottom. To me with both amps... they WANT to be driven a bit... when you are able to open em up they really come alive and to really fully appreciate what they can do is in a live setting. They cut through and yet still sit in the overall mix like nothing else I've ever played. I love both these amps.
