Does anyone use a brake-lite with the master volume model Monza? I installed one when I got my Monza but I don't think I've ever used it.

I'm going to try the Brake Light with the Monza either later tonight or tomorrow. I'll let you know my findings.

I've tried a Brake Lite with my MV Monza, and for me it's of no benefit. I get very similar tone either by backing off the MV or using the BL. By the time the power tubes saturate in the Monza it's getting mushy anyway because of the massive preamp. The benefit might be in fine tuning the volume at lower MV levels, but after it was all said and done I just ended up using the master volume for everything. The BL came out and I'm thinking about putting it in an open back extension cab.

I had the chance yesterday and a bit today to try the Brake Lite with my Monza and I can agree with Dave's comments above. Really, all the BL seemed to do was scrape a little top end off of the Monza and make it squishy, which, when played by itself wasn't so bad. In a live mix, I don't think it would cut the mustard.
I tried the Monza and Brake Lite with the G12H30 speaker and with the Maz's 10" speakers and it did the same to both. To my ears, it scraped less top end off of the G12H30 speaker, but I'll attribute that to the speaker not being broken in yet.

I used it quietly at practice again last night and the master volume was all I needed.

I don't really read any opposition to the MV like when it first came out. I wonder where the inspiration for the "massive preamp" came from? I'm increasingly finding more and more that Doc's amps are my favorites

My opinion on the brake lite is that a benefit of using is is knowing exactly how many DB's you are taking off. So with the Red Fang at 103 DB's almost if I use the MONZA with my Therapy and the other speaker is around 100 DB's...one click on the brake lite evens out the speakers better and then the MONZA doesn't dominate quite as much.
So for blending with others ... It adds a known reduction rate to the equation. Where as the MV is used by feel or ears...which when ears are getting old or tired or both, isn't always the best measure of sound equality.
Flat shovel or round point? I'll take both if possible. Without the Red Fang though I'd say what others are saying...that speaker kicks like a mule

I'm BRAND NEW to the Z world... thought they were all about clean power, until I recently played a 1x12 Monza! WHOA!!!
The Monza I played had a MV as well as a Brake Lite... I thought it was a lil redundant too, but is there a purpose for having BOTH?
thanks!

I thought it was a lil redundant too, but is there a purpose for having BOTH? thanks! The Monza is an assassin. After having mine for a month and putting it through the paces, I could see using a Brake Lite to run the master wide open, out of the circuit, to dial in a "cleaner" tone at lower volumes. There's so much preamp gain in this amp though that it's hard to find that power amp drive. Is it the front mounted MV or was the master on the back? The Brake Lite could have been in there prior to the PPIMV mod, or someone could also be using it as a separate 12" extension cab. If you're like me, the Brake Lite is unnecessary in the MV Monza.

It's brand new as far as i can tell, with MV up front. In fact it's listed at reverb now if you wanna look at it.

Yup, that's a new one. The blackout one with the 12" Z speaker would be the one I'd get.
I just got a Maz 18 with the 12" Z speaker and it's quite good. Sounds broken in right out of the box. I played my Monza through it last week and the 12" Z speaker was much smoother than the G12H I received with my Monza.
