So a few minutes ago I was listening to a Best of Cream cd, and I Feel Free was on. I got inspired...I don't have a vintage SG that was painted by the Fool, but I do have a nice 335 with 57 classic pickups, so I plugged it into my Monza and let 'er rip. Usually I have the Drive set equal or higher than the volume, but I found tonight that that isn't always the best way. I set up the Monza with V=3:00, D=9:00, T=2:00 and M=10:30 or so.
Very cool tone!
On the bridge pickup it really rips and sings. Great OD with enough volume to shake that 335 up a little and get it feeding back, and turning to the neck got me almost into the so-called "woman tone" that EC does so well. Rolled off the neck tone and it was really close. Some really inspiring tone!
It is a very nice pairing, the 335 and the Monza. Plus, I learned a lot tonight...I always have run the Drive control up quite high, which makes the amp a little darker and thicker. Turning the Drive down let me back off on the tone control a bit. That opened the amp up and let it breathe a little more. Really sounds fantastic on the bridge pickup of that lil red 335 of mine!
Has anyone else found some different tones out of the Monza lately? It's funny how (at least I do this) you can find one set up that works and get stuck with it. Like the Drive and Volume control thing I talked about. I always have set up the Drive higher than the Volume until tonight, then had to run the Tone high to compensate. Don't know why, somehow I just decided that it needed to be that way! Nope...

I don't have a Monza but I'm a Fool for Cream - especially that era, Disraeli Gears and Fresh Cream. I can get my Z28 to come close as we'll as the Remedy but it does take some volume to get there, but when it does my head tilts back, my eyes close, and I feel like I have a shag haircut like EC.

I loved my first MONZA with my old Es 125T...I love the MONZA with little to no drive, and the volume around 10 ish, the tone around 9. Without the master volume I find this to be a great base tone for pedals and chime drenched chords. With the MONZA more than any other amp I've owned, I find using the guitar knobs essential to getting a wide variety of sounds out of the amp.
