Hi I was Wondering If Anyone Knows If its safe to use a Sovtek / GZ34-5U4B-5Y3GT -Solid State Rectifier in A Maz 8? .
I already Know that its not really recommended in the maz 18 but safe in the maz 38.. But I haven't found anything on using it in the maz 8, Im trying to tighten up the bottom end at high volumes. I use 13-60 Gauge strings with my maz 8 in stereo Along with my old maz 18 and i find the bottom end it can get Farty in the maz 8 at stage volume. This is my band so you can get the idea of what i doing. Any info would be great.

And what rectifier? My Maz 8 came with the JJ GZ34, the Sovtek in my MAZ 18 is noticeably tighter but I really think rectifiers are way down in the chain of relevant parameters. Speakers, cabinets, power tubes, EQ settings and probably even cables come earlier for me. You could try a 6p14p power tube although it'll cost you a little volume. I like them a lot in both the 18 and the 8. After watching the videos: If you let your MAZ breathe a bit more (ie. set it cleaner) the bass should clear up nicely... then have the bass player fill it up more and tell him to get out of that midrange a bit!

I recall reading here somewhere that a Z amp running with just 2 EL84's was a serious no no re a solid state rectifier. I would check with the shop before trying it on the 8 as well.
AND welcome to the forum!
here is the solid state link I was referring to. ztalk.proboards.com/thread/47137/solid-state-rectifier-maz

What speaker do you have in the Maz 8? Alnico Blues are not great at the bottom end.
Love the guitar playing, btw.

I have Celestion Creamback 75H And A Celestion Gold In The 2x12. And Celestion Blue In The Maz 8. (your hearing the creamback and the blue on the videos).
EQ on maz 18:- Treble, Mid And Bass Are at 12 o clock, Master Vol on 9 o clock, cut and volume on full EQ On The Maz 8:- Bass Off, Treble, Mid ,Master Vol, cut and volume at 12 o clock. With a NOS 5751 in The phase inverter.
Apart from stereo Reverb and Delay In There FX Loop The Amps Are Dry with a old TS808 For Solos. (vintage vox wah and Fultone vibe when needed )
I bought My Maz 18 6/7 Years ago after Playing with Buddy Whittington, Gig it for a year or 2 then keep it as a studio amp. its only in the last year i decided to gig it again due to volume issues with my old rig. The Maz 8 i Bought a mouth ago, and its the maz 8 Making things Sound farty on times.
My old rig now spare rig is a 1964 Fender Vibroverb 1x15 JBL and a Marshall 1972 50JMP with 2 4x12 Greenbacks. ( Very Very loud )
What Im trying to find out is if i put a Sovtek solid state rectifier in My Maz 8, will it burn it up ??.
Im Thinking of trying Some EVL 12L's In both the 2x12 and combo, for tighter bottom and more clean headroom. any thoughts ?

I would try the EVM in the Maz * combo. It should tighten up the low end. Also the EVM is a pretty neutral speaker, so you can hear the true nature of the amp. I would then try it with the 18 with the original creamback blue combination and see what it sounds like before changing those out. It's the old scientific method. Change one thing at a time and see its effect. If you change more than one thing at a time you won't know what made it better or worse. Could be any one of the changes or all of them combined. You likely won't burn out the amp using the solid state, though there is the possibility of burning out a tube or resister attached to one. As I think someone said earlier, send an email to repairs at drzamps.com and ask. They will get back to you in a day or so.

I had a Blue in my Maz 8 and changed it to a G12H30, for the same reason...flubby bass. It tightened it up nicely. I bet the EV would sound nice too, they have a huge bottom end. Don't know how much more bass you can squeeze out of a single ended EL-84. Maybe try an equalizer in front of the amp? The Boss GE-7 does a nice job but it gets hissy if you boost the highs too much. Might be good for bass though. I find that with the speaker change I did that I get all the bass I need. The Blue just didn't have it.
