For me the test is always "how does it sound live?" I play the Remedy live, and with a loud band, the half power (20) watts doesn't have enough head room for me. At home, half power is perfect! If you never have enough headroom with the 38, which is something I think you mentioned in an earlier comment, I don't see how the 18 would work better, live.

I keep thinking back to the first bands I was in and the first amps I had (starting around '69) I don't think I ever heard anyone ask about "cleans" or "headroom" in an amp till after the internet. I was 14, I had one Ibanez RG, one wah pedal, two cables and a Peavey Ultra 4x10. Somehow, I had more fun playing back then, too. Go figure...

I set my 38 right after the edge of break up, but I have to click the Brake Lite to about "2" to make it manageable live. The 18 was able to get there without the need for the Brake Lite. That was really what intrigued me. I never really need pristine cleans, but even if I did, channel one on my Mesa F50 will give a Twin a run for it's money. Bold statement.

I was also thinking about getting a MAZ 38 because my MAZ Jr (2x10 combo) wasn't quite loud enough for most gigs. So I got another MAZ 18 (head) for the bigger gigs (2 amp setup). That was too hard to finesse. Just couldn't get it right. But then I got a great deal on an Antidote which was plenty. But I didn't like it attenuated (Marshall PowerBrake, Brake Lite, I've tried them all).
So my search was on again and I started looking at re-amp types. At first I didn't like the idea of re-amping but I thought I'd try it. BadCat Unleash. Works as advertised. Plus you get an effects loop after the full sound of the amp. Great for time based effects. I've been using it for over a year now and I always take it live. Oh, and it also has 2 foot switchable volume settings. I use it for solo boost.
Now I can use my MAZ 18 for loud gigs and make it as loud as I want. Up to 100 watts. Or my Antidote and take it down a touch. Either with clear delays, reverbs, modulation effects (in the loop). I play mainly in a 2 guitar (loud, but not obnoxious) rock band, and also in a slightly less loud americana/modern rock band. I can take either amp and know I'll always be covered. I also bring a Mesa Boogie TA-15 as a back up, but have never has to use it yet. My Z's are totally dependable.
for reference these are my main live rigs: I use a 2x12 Mojotone Bluesbreaker ext.with Vintage 30's with my MAZ 18NR head Antidote with Marshall 1965B 4X10 ( 2 Celestion G10 golds and 2 Celestion Vintage 10's) This is a great match for me for the Antidote. A little looser in the low end. MAZ JR 2x10 with Celestion G10 gold's, great for quieter things. Don't need the unleash. Mesa Boogie Lonestar with 2- 2x12 cabs, again Gold's and V30's. Rarely gets used anymore now that I run the Unleash with my Z's
So if you're thinking about attenuators, or if amp isn't the right volume (up or down) you may want to try one of these. I believe the Fryette Power Station is the same concept with a tube power section.
