Hi, Mistakes could happen... even to the very best (and I don't mean me! ) My Maz 8 Studio Combo, the one that starts it all for me about Z amps, had one very tiny factory mistake I discovered very early: lo and hi inputs were reversed. Really not a big deal. Mister Z himself explained to me how to proceed at that time, but I let it untouched for almost two years... Quite annoyed with a tiny metal rattle somewhere, I finally opened my Maz to check everything was tight in there (and for the pleasure to give a look to all these candies, I confess). So I took the occasion to reverse the inputs into the usual position. I check every screw, changed all tubes for a fresh set... but the rattle was still there. I looked for the origin of this little rattle and you my chance around the reverb tank. The tank was in its bag, but on the wrong side! I mean the "closed side", the chassis, was facing the amp side, and the "open side" of the tank was turned to the speaker side. So I guessed that was wrong (am I correct?) and reversed it to what feels the right position to me. Since I had read it could be a cause, I also added a touch of silicon on certain "pins" thats keep the springs tray from deflecting too far and on the wires which could vibrate on the cover. And now rattle is gone and do love my amp even more if that's possible (really dig this amp - I neglected it for a while because of my Therapy, but I play it all the time these days).

Mine is faced open side toward the speaker but it hasn't rattled.

Mine is faced open side toward the speaker but it hasn't rattled. So it may be the right side and there must be a reason to that... even if it looks unnatural to me! Thanks for your input (I may keep mine the other way around though, at least if next days confirm that the rattle has gone).

Did yours have the foam block behind the reverb unit ?

Look at the last letter on the code of the tank (7th). If it's an A it's designed for open side up. If it's a B it's designed for open side down.

Did yours have the foam block behind the reverb unit ? Yes it did (and still does of course).

Look at the last letter on the code of the tank (7th). If it's an A it's designed for open side up. If it's a B it's designed for open side down. I'll do that, thank you. There are some rubber feet, through which the tank can be fixed, so I thought it was supposed to be open side down. But I'll check.

Didn't check yet, but found information abut the 7th letter of the code. For a vertical mounting, it even should be a C, D, E or F, not an A nor a B (horizontal mounting): 7th character: Mounting plane A = horizontal, open side up B = horizontal, open side down C = vertical wall, long axis horizontal, connectors up D = vertical wall, long axis horizontal, connectors down E = vertical wall, long axis vertical, input up F = vertical wall, long axis vertical, output up Mine works fine, that's for sure! (but now I admit I'm curious )

Fun thread....figuring these things out certainly ads to the enjoyment of them.

Fun thread....figuring these things out certainly ads to the enjoyment of them. Yes it does... when you actually figure things out! I've played today. No more rattle, so I don't touch a single thing anymore!

Now I read that the output transformer of the reverb tank itself should be as far as possible from the output transformer of the amp, in order to avoid or limit hum. So that's why Dr Z install them this way in the Maz 8 I guess and I'll have to check that. Can you tell I do enjoy these kind of investigation? Cause, in my own house, I may appear as a total fool!
